This is a heartbreaking story told from a mother's perspective following her son's suicide. The family's journey through deep pain and sorrow is very well expressed. For those who have never been faced with such heart wrenching pain this story is a very real eye opener. This mother holds nothing back as she expresses her grief in the hours, days, weeks and months that follow this terrible and so unexpected tragedy. Her story is well worth reading.

Never in a million years did I think I'd ever find myself reviewing a book because of my own child's suicide, just as Suzy LaBonte never dreamed of having to write such a book. Zachary's Choice is an EXCELLENT book if you wish to see EXACTLY how it feels to walk this path and how to help someone who is dealing with this turmoil. This is also an excellent book for survivors of suicide (that is what we are called) who are struggling with the guilt, obsession of why, "comfort" from friends, and facing holidays.

For you think that "good" kids never commit suicide, think again. It is not only drug addicts, criminals and the mentally ill. Like Ms. Labonte, one of my first thoughts was, "We were by no means perfect , but things like this do not happen to Christian homeschooling families, do they?"

I am even planning on ordering extra copies of this book to give to families with teenagers and possibly even to local funeral homes to give away to families who lose a child to suicide.

Mrs. LaBonte says "Someone please tell me exactly what happened so that I don't kill another of my children with my carelessness or negligence, or selfishness. I promise I will do better. I promise I won't let it happen again." I say that also. I pray that you never have to.

I have not lost a child to death but I have had a family member commit suicide and have had several serious attempts made by loved ones. Their attempts, thankfully, were unsuccessful and led to hospitalizations which allowed them to receive help and healing. Suzy LaBonte's son did not receive help and healing as he showed no obvious warning signs to family members or friends. Suzy experienced great guilt after losing Zachary as she wanted to go back in time and help him.

Suzy dealt honestly and respectfully with her feelings and struggles after losing her son in such a tragic way. She described her own progression through the five stages of grief: shock, anger, guilt, depression, and acceptance. None of the stages were quick and easy. None were without struggle. They certainly weren't without tears. Zachary's mother admits she is not a professional counselor but I felt that she spoke clearly and in ordinary language so that anyone could easily understand and apply the script to their own lives. I have three grown daughters and I found myself grieving with this precious mom over the senseless loss of her beautiful son. She urges readers to seek professional help if needed and includes many useful tips for those who are experiencing their own grief after a suicide.

I rate this book 5 stars and would highly recommend it to readers.

I received a copy of this book from netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Zachary's Choice is such a heartbreaking book. I could not imagine what this mother went through after her son's suicide. I admire her courage to write her experiences to help others who has experienced the same heartache. Though the subject matter is hard to read and I found myself in tears in times, I did like the book.

    Full of faith and inspiration.

    5 stars.
