Tell us a little about yourself. Starr and I have been married since 1983, and have 3 grown kids spread out from Washington, D.C., to Dallas to Utah. I grew up in a small town in southeastern New Mexico. At that time it was a blue collar town built around oilfield service companies and high school sports. Values and attitudes were pretty conservative and few issues fell in the grey areas between black and white. I received a BA in Business at Baylor and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown. I also received an MA in Christian Counseling from Dallas Baptist University. I spent my working life in Texas, New York and Washington, D.C., as a stockbroker, banker, and bank liquidator.
What was your motivation behind this project? Several years ago it became apparent that I would not likely be around to share adult type conversations with my grandkids. I concluded that the most valuable legacy I could leave would be a map to achieve your dreams while side-stepping many of the pitfalls that can send you back to Start. That led to a series of essays which subsequently became a book. Its not literature; its a conversation of questions to lead a thinking person to their own conclusions. And when asked the right questions, most of us can sift through our thoughts and recognize whats right for us and thats the first step in the right direction.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? FOCUS and ENCOURAGEMENT! Youre the Boss! explores six fundamental perspectives in six brief, but thorough chapters. It is not political; its straight talking, mainstream Christian American! We look at the reality of accountability and the certainties of self-reliance! We come to understand that once our goal is chosen and our plan is constructed we also know the target, the path and the pitfalls. These arent the lessons and habits being taught at school or sold on television.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? I'm acutely aware of my need to "check-in" with God - often, and repeatedly - to get his assurance that He and I are on this trip, it is real, and what others may misunderstand is not something He's looking at me to clear up! As long as I know He's in the middle of it - I'm good!
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? John Eldredge is all 3 - an influence, an inspiration and a favorite author...I totally get him. Also inspired by Rick Warren and Joel Osteen - I'm very big into taking responsibility for our thought life!
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: Since the beginning of time, man has been either an explorer or a settler. Both types learned early on that no progress could be made without a map and a plan. Recognizing and accepting that only you are accountable for your very own destiny is a prerequisite to preparing your individualized life map. If you believe anything in this book, believe this--the only person who can keep you from your dream is you! The mission of this book is to help you target your individual goals and then to develop habits that will predictably achieve them. Each of the 6 chapters can be read in 30 minutes or less!
