Product Description

We all have choices to make every day, even the youngest children. The choices we make play a large part in forming who we grow to be as adults. For kids, those choices can include whether to be obedient or disobedient, to share or be selfish, to have a good attitude or not, and more. John Ortberg addresses the ability to choose in a whimsical way by inviting children to use their "magnificent chooser" that God gave them to make right choices daily.

Your Magnificent Chooser, written by John Ortberg and illustrated by Robert Dunn, teaches children the power of a person's will using whimsical rhymes and delightful illustrations. Starting with the premise that your will aka your chooser is a God-given gift, the narrative continues by emphasizing the importance of this gift and presenting some ideas of how this gift is used. It then addresses mistakes and new starts as well as boundaries to be respected. Appropriately, the book ends with an encouraging find something great / For your Chooser to do.

I have an almost-five year old who, since starting VPK last August, has been working to learn some challenging social concepts. I requested this book, hoping to empower her to see that she can make her own decisions instead of imitating others. To that end, this book fit the bill. I liked how it addressed situations with friends who might not want to do the same thing. I do wish it had addressed more how to respond to a parent who asks you to do something (like cleaning your room) when you'd rather play. The issue was brought up in the book, but it wasn't immediately resolved as the next page moved into the concept of clashing wills with a friend and that was resolved by choosing to be friendly again.

I recommend this book to Christian parents (as it does mention God) who want to instill in their children a sense of self-responsiblity and empower them to make their own firm choices.

So based on the book description and the fact that Ive read other good books by John Ortberg, I really really wanted to enjoy this book. But unfortunately, it was just weird and confusing.

I first read the book myself and was thoroughly unimpressed. I then decided to read it to my 4 year old, thinking maybe he would have a different perspective since it was written to engage kids his age. He too, had a very confused reaction.

Although I understand the concept that Ortberg is trying to portray: the fact that we all have the ability to choose and to choose options that allow us to thrive or that knock us down; it was not written in a way that was engaging and insightful. Rather, his chosen word chooser made the entire story very confusing. There was no mention of the Holy Spirit who, as part of the Trinitarian God is the one that guides our conscience or decision-making.

I also thought it would mention many of the more difficult decisions a child faces in relation to being the child of God they were designed to be. Instead, it seemed to focus more on day to day little decisions, that in all reality, choosing one way or the other would not result in sin, thus would not be a decision that deeply affects their relationship with Christ.

I, and my 4 year old, were simply disappointed.

I received this book free in exchange for an honest review.

Your Magnificent Chooser, written by John Ortberg, illustrated by Robert Dunn, published by Tyndale Kids: a division of Tyndale Publishing, is a minute publication designed to introduce young readers to the concept of utilizing their God-given ability to choose.

This book is very well written and perfect for its intended audience. Those possessing a beginner's reading ability, and even those who rely on their parents, grandparents, or siblings to share their voices as they observe the illustrations, will find this publication fun and interesting.

The writing style, similar to that of Dr. Suess, along with the magnificent illustrations that will certainly entice the imagination of the reader and/or listener to kick into high gear, causing them to consult their chooser before making their daily choices.

Your Magnificent Chooser, is a recommended purchase for use with your own children/grandchildren or as a gift for the parent(s) of a younger child.

This is a wonderful children's book for teaching children that they have a mind and will--with which they can choose their attitude, their mood, what they say, how they act and react, etc. The fun rhyming verse and darling illustrations keep children's attention. The book closes by reminding them that they can pray to God for wisdom to help them make the best choices.

At the beginning of the book is a note to parents from the author. I would say the book is geared to 3-8 year old children.

Tyndale House Publishers provided a complimetary copy of this book for review.

First, what a great topic. It is something that I discuss with my kids even as they get older. The power of a good choice. I was excited the Ortberg touched on this topic with the younger generation.

The book itself is beautiful. Robert Dunn did very well with the illustrations. I loved the rhyming and how it was written. Something that was really cool was my youngest snuggled up and we read it together and he was confused. He wanted to know what the whole book meant so we had a talk about what it means to make a God honoring choice.

This is a book that will make a permanent place on our book shelves.

I received this book from Tyndale Publishing in exchange for my honest review.
