The story You are Special introduces us to the Wemmicks, wooden puppets made by Eli the Woodcarver. They live in Wemmicksville, not far from Eli's workshop, and they treat each other pretty much like humans treat each other. Punchinello is chipped and ugly, and thinks he's not worth much at all. But Eli helps him come to understand how special he is, marks and all, and how much Eli loves him.
In Best of All, a very famous Wemmick comes to town--Bess Stovall. She will only associate with Wemmicks made of maple--the "best" wood. Punchinello is left out, but Eli helps him see that he doesn't need to be made of the "right" wood to be special, he is special because Eli made him that way.

Every day the small wooden people called Wemmicks do the same thing: stick either gold stars or gray dots on one another. The pretty ones--those with smooth wood and fine paint--always get stars. The talented ones do, too. Others, though, who can do little or who have chipped paint, get ugly gray dots. Like Punchinello.
In this heartwarming children's tale from the best-selling pen of author Max Lucado, Eli the woodcarver helps Punchinello understand how special he is--no matter what other Wemmicks may think. It's a vital message for children everywhere: that regardless of how the world evaluates them, God cherishes each of them, just as they are.
This tale originally appeared within one of the chapters in the award-winning children's bestseller Tell Me the Secrets.

special they are in a very short, novelette form. I do take the time to explain to the children just how very special
and unique each one is...........knowing they are made by their Creator :)
