Publisher's Description

Here is John Wycliffe's greatest accomplishment: the translation of the Holy Scriptures into English. Producing the first complete English bible, Wycliffe was the first to set aside Latin as the language of the Scriptures and to reach the English people in their own tongue. Working from contemporary manuscripts of the Latin Vulgate, he sought "no strange English" but only the easiest, most common-albeit the most Latin-like-language possible. (Latin constructions and word order were preserved even where they conflicted with English idiom.) His work was used by the Lollards, a group of itinerant preachers ("poor priests") who went about preaching, reading, and teaching from the English Bible. Wycliffite translations of the New Testament (1380) and Old Testament (1388), which was actually completed by Nicholas of Hereford, opened a new epoch in the history of the Bible. In this new edition, LAMP POST has taken a 600 year old ancient translation and made a modern, clean, readable version--a simple yet fun dichotomy--creating a project that all book- and bible-lovers are sure to appreciate and enjoy

I agree with the review of CaptainRick although my main translation is not the New King James although I do have it as well as other modern translations and the ones mentioned in his review. It is quite interesting to see how the English language has changed over the centuries, but the word of God is unchanging and beautiful and it reminds me to apply the scripture of 2 Timothy 2:14 when I read other translations.

This review was written for Wycliffe Bible, Paper.
This is a great reproduction. The craftsmanship is excellent but reading it takes some time. You'll need to get use to the old English, spelling and the type font used. That is not as big of an obstacle as one may think, just a little work.

I like to read a chapter or text in context in this translation, the Matthew Bible, Geneva Bible and the King James 1611 and compare them. Then I look at the New King James for comparison. I like to go back to the Hebrew and Greek to make sure I'm on track. It strengthens my recall and imbeds the Word of God in my heart.

Because I naturally love the translations, I must remember that they speak of Jesus and not let slip away my first love.

It also is invaluable in sharing with new believers because they need to see the truth of the scriptures in a correct modern language and the best way to do this is in using the New King James. I haven't found a modern translation I like better.

I highly recommend these translations as you grow closer to our Lord.

Q: Does this edition include the apocrypha?

No, they chose only to include the canonized texts in this work. They did include the Epistle to the Laodiceans, but with a caveat of interest only, not regarding it’s authenticity as a document.
