Writing & Rhetoric assumes students learn best by reading excellent literature and improving their own writing skills by imitating those writers. For students who complete the entire program, they will read and learn to write narrative, expository, descriptive, and persuasive essays while developing a unique style; this book, Fable covers narrative writing. Each exercise is designed to teach a skill that can be employed across all subjects. Skills are arranged from simple to complex, and the cumulative nature of each chapter reviews skills from earlier in the book, helping students to build a solid foundation of writing skills.
In Fable, students will learn about the form of fables, discover culturally important examples, practice reading short texts, learn to copy accurately, strengthen their memory through dictation, gain opportunities to imitate sentences & fables, learn about the concepts of the main idea/character traits, and more.
Lessons start with the fable, and are followed by the student's narration of the story. The "Talk about It" section provides students with questions that require personal application and critical thinking. "Go Deeper" questions are multiple-choice questions that cover writing concepts and vocabulary in the piece. "Writing Time" exercises integrate copywork, dictation, "sentence play," and rewriting exercises.
154 non-reproducible pages, softcover. NIV Scripture used. This workbook is part of the Writing & Rhetoric curriculum and covers the narrative writing style; it is the first book in the series, and is designed for grades 3-4. Covers 1 semester.

Joanne5 Stars Out Of 5An excellent fit.November 2, 2015JoanneQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My children were in Grades 5 and 7 when we used this book, which is much older than the age recommendation however I wanted to begin with the first book in the series. While they managed the material easily, the format does not "talk down" to students and so they never really felt out of place, and I am glad we started here.
I have used many different writing programs with my children. Some did not suit them, others did not suit me, and with all of them a struggle ensued at some point during the writing program. There was always some element that deterred us from completing any program in a year, and I always needed to supplement in some fashion. That has now changed.
This program is incredibly manageable. Each lesson can be completed easily in one week, taking a couple of days off from writing if needed. Everything the child needs to complete the course is contained in the student notebook, with no need for additional binders or texts or DVDs. I did purchase and follow along in the Teacher's Manual, which was beneficial in providing writing examples for ease of teaching. There were no surprises for me to stumble through. The material covered, the Fables, were well written and appropriate for a large span of ages (adults included), and provide samples of good writing.
The literary elements covered was exactly what I was looking for...copywork, narration, some grammar (limited in this Book 1), dictation, vocabulary, elocution, and of course - writing. I had always tried to incorporate these elements in our year, but fell short while trying different source texts and trying to schedule them all in. This program does it for me, again, within the one student workbook.
With so many benefits to the program, I would continue to use it even if my children were not as enthusiastic. Gladly this is not the case! This is one component of our day that they always thoroughly enjoy. My son and daughter never hesitate or complain during this course, and this is the first writing program for which I can say this! We are currently working through the second book in the series, and I am equally pleased. Book 3 will be purchased soon.
momof3inVT5 Stars Out Of 5We love it!October 13, 2015momof3inVTQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I did a ton of research trying to find the right curriculum for my reluctant writer. Somehow, I stumbled across "Writing and Rhetoric, Book 1: Fable" and decided to take a chance. I am so glad I did! My son (8 yr/3rd grade) told me today that it is his favorite part of school. What a long way we have come!
This makes writing fun to teach, and fun to learn. And, I have found the concepts are so easy to apply to other subjects (summary, main idea, etc). Can't say it enough, we love this curriculum!

They will be producing two books per year until all 12 of the books have been published.
I have struggled with teaching my children writing, as I have been a very poor writer over my life time. I have improved significantly the last several years, but am still uneasy teaching my children. We tried out some other curriculum that I was super excited about, but in the end I feel it was busy work rather than helpful in developing their writing capabilities.
This year I started my 5th and 6th grader in this book and we've already made it through three lessons. They have been very excited about it and I feel I have been able to do a better job of explaining to them and giving them feedback through this format. I do not feel as though it is written too simply for them. I feel the book is set up where it can be easier for a child who is challenged or you can require more of an advanced child.
Each lesson can be covered over the course of the week, generally spending 3-4 days per lesson. I tend to give them 2 days on the writing portion so they can give it more attention. Each book should be easily finished in a semester even if you need to skip it for a week.
There are additional resources on the publishers website such as downloads of the fables to be read to the student. I do recommend using the teaching guide with the student edition. The teaching book gives full text of the student book as well as dictations and additional suggestions. However, the student book could probably be used without the teacher book. I highly recommend reading through the introductions and such prior to starting into this book with your student.
The only negative I'd say is that to use two books in a year is a little pricey. The student book is consumable and not reproducible. Wish they'd combined two books into one so that perhaps the price could be a little more reasonable. I am sure they have a good reason for doing it the way they did.
Depending on where your students writing ability is, you might be able to start off in a different book, but might miss some building blocks. Glad I started from the beginning even if it is for a "younger" age.
