Product Description

Bring your creative students' ideas to life with Sharon Watson's Writing Fiction in High School. They'll learn how to write both novels and short stories through two tracks. Over 100 practical lessons teach students how to write engaging dialogue, build scenes, ramp up conflict, create empathetic protagonists, and select a point of view, describe settings, hook readers, critique themselves, get published, and more. Chapters provide instruction in a conversational tone with plenty of literary examples integrated to show well-written prose. Writing assignments are provided, as well as bullet-pointed lists of what the chapter covered. Important terms are bolded.

The first track is for all writers of all levels, while the second (extracurricular) "manuscript track" is for those who have written a manuscript or are writing a manuscript. Designed to work best in a group with discussions and critiques, homeschoolers are encouraged to start their own groups if they're not already working in a co-op class environment, though it may be used in a self-taught environment. Students are assigned some short stories and the novel The Last Book in the Universe by Rodman Philbrick, which will have to be purchased elsewhere or borrowed from the library.

Two-semester course; only the first track is necessary to receive full course completion credits-the second course is designed to be extracurricular. No prerequisites necessary. 286 pages, softcover.

Tell us a little about yourself.  I'm a "retired" homeschool mom who couldn't stop teaching when she ran out of her own children! I teach a popular course in fiction and nonfiction writing and one in literature to local homeschool high school students. I love teaching homeschool students; they come to the classes ready to learn.

What was your motivation behind this project?  Where are our C. S. Lewises? Our Jane Austens? Is there a Christian writer willing and trained to step up and take the late Ray Bradbury's place as a fantastical storyteller? Will one of our students have the boldness to write about that one moment of true grace, as Flannery O'Connor hid in her stories? After teaching fiction as a part of a larger nonfiction course, I decided to hand pick some of my stronger fiction writers and take them through some deeper material that eventually became WRITING FICTION . So many homeschool moms tell me that their sons or daughters love to write stories and would do it all day if they could. This curriculum will give those students direction and help them polish their stories for a larger audience.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  It's time for our high school students to prepare to impact the culture through storytelling. Even if they never write another story, they will have a deeper understanding of stories and stronger discernment when reading books; that knowledge will give them clearer insights into their literature classes, too.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Stories--books, movies, and songs--greatly impact and shape our culture because they speak to the heart. Let's equip our teens to speak to our culture's heart.
