We were disappointed with this curriculum, and I regret spending a year trying to muddle through it. It's very repetitive and monotonous, to the point that I believe the student book could have easily been condensed to less than half its size. Instead of fostering a love for writing, we were wearied. We have since found curriculum that is rich and rewarding. As a home schooling family, we have discovered that finding a good fit requires some trial and error. This writing program was definitely an error.

The assignments in this book were so boring that we had to switch to something else after just a couple of months. So disappointing, considering the amount of money we paid for it. What a waste. Too much returning to the same passage of writing and if your child doesn't connect with the specific prompt, it makes it hard to complete the rest of the assignments.

i have a keen and eager writer but this nearly finished her off! too much editing of the same passages just made it seem long winded and boring. i understand the need for reviewing work and making it better but there are limits and this exceeded them. It is a very thick workbook too and could definitely put off a not so keen student. we eventually both decided to quit ... she was disheartened and even i dreaded it and I love LA. she was Grade 5 when we tried this.

I used this with my daughter when she was in 6th grade. I was so bummed at the start of this past school year (2017/2018) that the second volume wasn't out yet, so we had to choose a different curriculum for this year. We really loved this curriculum. I found it quite challenging for a 6th grader, and am quite shocked that they recommend it for starting at 4th-8th grade, especially considering it's really a student-led course. I like that's it's student-led though as I feel that really helps children learn to become more independent and was really written easily enough for them to understand and follow along without needing too much guidance from me. One reviewer mentioned that the book has you jumping all over the place and while that is true to some extent (mainly just for marking their rubrics) there are many other curriculum that does the same. IEW, for example, has multiple resources that have to be referred to. While I do feel this curriculum is a little light on grammar, I found adding in Easy Grammar helped with that and I liked that this still incorporated it so my student could see how what they learned in EG correlated with actual writing. By the end of the year, my student's writing had DRAMATICALLY improved! Overall, she thoroughly enjoyed this curriculum and I'm contemplating continuing with it for her next year even though she's entering 8th grade. My son is entering 6th grade and I'm so glad they also came up with a separate student book, so now I can get just that for him and still use my original book for him to take the course too. Smart on their part, as that was really my only original complaint with the curriculum!

I also loved the Reader's in Residence. This was a really complete Literature component and the two together gelled really well and made for a great combined curriculum. I hope more people give this curriculum a shot. I loved the Rubrics as they give the teacher the confidence and the knowledge on how to grade writing, which for some can be the most difficult part of it. The book is truly engaging with the color and the layout for the student. The flow of it is natural and doesn't feel so boring like other curriculum that focus too much on the breakdown of sentence structure and not enough on the big picture. The "big picture" approach allows students to get why they sentence structure is important without even realizing it.

I would recommend being able to review this curriculum in it's entirely before purchasing it. The actual writing assignments were not a good fit for my 4th and 7th grader. Both of my boys are adopted and the family tree assignment was a big challenge. I really wanted to like this curriculum, because it combined grammar and writing, but finally decided I need to find a different writing program to finish out the year. I am bummed.
