This Apologia writing curriculum is a complete, writing-focused language arts program that integrates grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.
Teaching students about sentence structure, the parts of speech, punctuation, capitalization, and usage within the context of creating clear, engaging stories and essays, this program sets aside the traditional "personal/ expository/persuasive/narrative" divisions in favor of real-life writing assignments. Volume 1 focuses on introducing the parts of speech and how they function in a sentence, including: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections.
Thorough and systematic, six units and twenty-four modules are included, with lively and colorful lessons building on previously-taught concepts, skills, and terms. The easy-to-use, "all-in-one" Student Text and Workbook features an engaging tone that's written directly to the student. Each unit opener includes a focus on a Christian writer, unit overview, and rubric; units include models from professional writers for students to study and use as an inspiration for their own writing. Modules integrate clear, engaging instruction with sidebar notes and a variety of exercises.
Assignments cycle through four types of writing tasks:
- I Remember: assignments focused on the personal narrative
- I Imagine: creative writing assignments such as short stories, poetry, and novels
- I Investigate: research skills assignments
- I Think: tasks that teach opinion and argument writing, including persuasive and argument writing

JF5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent for my hard to please studentJuly 6, 2017JFQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I purchased this book for my 10 year old, who has a very short attention span. The assignments were interesting and engaging for her and she really dove into several of the assignments. We have had some very good discussions prompted by various assignments throughout the book. I like the way it's organized and the myriad of topics it introduces.
Lindsey Jane3 Stars Out Of 5Not Well OrganizedMay 10, 2017Lindsey JaneQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 2The way this book is organized is very confusing and difficult for kids to have any independence with. You have to jump all over the place in the book. The modules and the grading matrix are far too complex. I really like the actual content and assignments, but they over complicated the process in this book. I'm also finding it difficult to keep everything well organized, since you would think all work would be written in, but that isn't the case. Some assignments require students to cut out parts of the workbook. When the kids need to revise what they have written, they have to write it on separate paper. I loved it in the beginning but it became a big, confusing mess by the end of the year.
kimberino5 Stars Out Of 5Answer to Prayer!May 13, 2016kimberinoQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I bought two copies of this book and 1 answer book for my 4th and 6th grader. I intended to use them next year, but loved the look and format of it so much that we stopped using our previous English curriculum and started this one a couple weeks ago. I was really sensing the need for change with our language arts program, and an overall need to make our homeschool feel more natural, and to stop trying to make my home look like school so much. Writers In Excellence has helped us to do just that. Grammar is taught naturally within the context of writing. The book is easy for us to read aloud and then the kids do their exercises/writing for the day. Since we've only used it for a couple weeks, I can't attest to the whole book, but we love it so far! And I wrote the author to see what I could use for my 2nd grader. She wrote back the next day (awesome) and recommended using Writers In Excellence, just modify for his level. It's worked wonderfully for us so far (ie. he writes 3 sentences about a childhood place while the older 2 write 10). At first glance, I thought it would've been better for the author to have a teacher's manual and student workbook separate so the book isnt so big and somewhat pricey. But it is written to the student, and in my mind, well worth them having their own books to read from and write in. I'm willing to pay a little extra for the convenience.
