Product Description

Have you ever wondered what the devotional life of Jesus may have been like when He was growing up in Nazareth? What Scriptures would He have read? What prayers would He have prayed?
The unique devotional What Would Jesus Read? provides some answers to those questions by following a Jewish system of Bible reading. Both in ancient times and today, rabbis divided Scripture portions and assigned them to specific families, who would then be responsible for memorizing and teaching that portion in the synagogue.
Using these Old Testament scriptures in conjunction with the Jewish calendar, What Would Jesus Read? provides a full year's worth of reflections for personal or corporate use. Discover the rich heritage of Bible study by reading and considering the same texts as the Savior.

Publisher's Description

After the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem, the Jews were exiled to Babylon. Not only was there no longer a physical place to pray, even the sacred Scriptures were becoming scarce. Many of the biblical scrolls were lost or destroyed during the exile. In an attempt to preserve the Scriptures, the Rabbis divided up the biblical texts into weekly reading portions and distributed them among the families of Israel. Each was responsible for memorizing their assigned passage and then reading it in the synagogue every Sabbath.

This system of reading is the basis for the story found in Luke 4:16-17: "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him."

This system is still in use today by Jews all over the world. In WHAT WOULD JESUS READ?, Joe Amaral gives modern day Christians the opportunity to follow and practice the same devotional system that Jesus used!

Was looking for a different devotional when I began 2013. This one has spoken to me and was just what I needed on many of the days. Joe usually gives the cultural setting of the words of Jesus. I highly recommend it.

In What Would Jesus Read?, author Joe Amaral aims to give modern-day Christians a chance to follow the same devotional system that Jesus would have used in his day. Sounds like a perfect follow-up to Amaral's first book, Understanding Jesus, which I absolutely loved, thus I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book.

Unfortunately, What Would Jesus Read? doesn't quite deliver. Having been intrigued by the opportunity to follow Jesus' devotional style, I was more than disappointed to find that each day's devotion was merely one verse (often a single phrase, even), followed by Amaral's reflections on the verse. The daily readings fell far short of exploring the selected verse to a depth worthy of being called the devotional system of Jesus.

True to Amaral's forte, however, many days' readings did, fortunately, offer an historical perspective that shed new light on the verse. Sadly, many others did not. For those who appreciate that angle of Biblical study and reflection, I highly recommend Amaral's Understanding Jesus.

I received this book free from Faith Words Publisher for the purpose of providing my honest review.
