"Christian families today often find themselves stuck between two storiestheir own familys story and Gods story. Its like theyre living two lives: their Christian life and their "real world" life. The trick is figuring out how to get your familys story to line up with Gods story in the world around us, helping you raise children who have the character, values, and mission that allows them to go out into the real world and live out a real faith. Real World Parents is a parenting book that helps you to be proactive, rather than reactive, when it comes to raising Christian kids in a world that is filled with contradictions to a life of faith. Rather than trying to raise kids who are "good Christians," youll find the tools to help you live out a faith that allows your children to see what it means to live as a Christian. As a result, your kids will learn about real faith by living it out with you. Culture expert and veteran youth pastor, Mark Matlock, will help you explore issues such as: • Helping your child make decisions • The importance of failure • Knowing Gods story for your family • Changing the story your family is in • The pursuit of wisdom, and much more God has placed us here to interact with and represent him to the world by engaging with the culturenot retreating from it. Rather than trying to isolate your children from the world or draw lines that keep them from truly engaging in the world God calls us to help and heal, you can learn how to lead your family towards an integrated life where your story and Gods story come together to make a difference in the world around you."
Mark Matlock has been working with youth pastors, students, and parents for more than two decades. Hes the Executive director of Youth Specialties and founder of WisdomWorks Ministries and PlanetWisdom. Hes the author of several books including The Wisdom On series, Living a Life That Matters, Dont Buy the Lie, and Raising Wise Children. Mark lives in Texas with his wife, Jade, and their two teenage children.
Real World Parents is also the source for the parenting seminars of the same name, which will be presented beginning in the spring of 2010 by seasoned youth workers around the country (over 200 pastors and youth leaders have received training to present Real World Parents). Matlocks vision is to empower churches (who he calls the people doing the real ministry) to spread this emerging parenting model on a local level.
Abbie5 Stars Out Of 5March 9, 2010AbbieReal World Parents, Mark MatlockI was really impressed with this book and the writing style of Mark Matlock. The 140 page book is divided into ten easy to read chapters. Most chapters begin with a set of questions to make you stop and think about your true feelings about the topic to be discussed. Then each chapter ends with self-evaluation questions about the topic. Many require prayer and thought and a deep look at what our true beliefs and motivations are. My copy of this book is underlined and marked up. In the margins are many penned prayers and scripture references. I found the book to a great encouragement since our family has already put many of these things to practice it is nice to know others are doing the same thing and you are not alone. This is not a how to or quick fix book filled with a list of dos and donts and rules to follow. Rather it is a challenge to Christian parents to change our lives from the inside out showing our kids how doing so has changed everything (page 41). It is about living out a genuine faith and helping our children develop a vibrant faith of their own (page 38). I love that he states on page 64 Become something different!/Dont settle for conforming to the worlds pattern with a little churchy flavoring thrown in. We need to be transformed./completely new and different and fresh. How true this is!! We are in this world to do the masters business, ambassadors of God lets starting living it without the legalism and religious constraints but in the fullness of the grace and love bestowed upon us. Lets equip our children to be as wise as serpents and peaceful as doves so that they can operate and navigate this world accomplishing the unique task that God has given them as individuals.Thank you Cook Communications and B&B Media for the review copy.
