Based upon the concept of a "sort," the process of grouping sounds, words, and pictures that represent words, into specific categories, Words Their Way encourages a close examination of the regularities and conventions of reading and spelling English.
The included teacher's guide provides a lesson plan for each sort (one sort per week), with objectives, materials need, instructions on teaching the lesson, word box with challenge words, and a sidebar on building vocabulary. Lessons are arranged with Day 1 for introducing the sort, Day 2 practicing, Day 3 Finding Words in Context, Day 4 Applying the Skills, and Day 5 Completing the Sort. Teacher tips, challenge words, and ELL notes provided.
The accompanying Word Study Notebook is an integral part of the program. Each sort includes word cards to cut out, which students then match to the phonetic sort being taught that week on the provided grid. Students study words by cutting, sorting, classifying, and past ing/categorizing them according to spelling patterns, sounds, word families, etc. Lessons consist mostly of sorting cards to encourage hands-on involvement that helps teach students to better recognize letters, patterns, and concepts in new contexts.
A Word Sort Envelope is included; use it to keep all of the cut-out word sorts in one easy location. There is a place on the inside back cover of the Student Word Study Notebook for attaching the envelope.
Level C/3rd Grade focuses on syllables and affixes, including r-influenced vowel patterns, three-letter blends, word endings, contractions, adding -ing, unusual plurals, compound words, and specific syllable junctures in various patterns.
This Grade 3, Level C kit includes:
Please Note: each week the teacher's guide references materials on the "Teacher Resource CD," poems to read in the "Big Book of Rhymes," and accompanying books to read from the "Words Their Way" library. These components are NOT included in the homeschool kit.

I did not read her review before purchasing. I will be returning this bundle. I did just find out that Pearson is going to include the teachers resource cd as of May 7th, 2015.
This was poorly put together for home schooler's.
In this bundle you are receiving 2 out of 5 resources that the public schools uses. That means you are using 2 and a half days of the 5 days that are listed for instructions in the teachers manual. Why did they even include it in our instructions if they only provide you with the teachers guide and the student workbook?!? Then when you finally get through to get some answers they say that the program is fine without these elements and are not worth the money to buy them. (they charge $75 for the teachers resource cd)
The 1st day -Introduce the sort - you read the poem (which is not included in the teachers guide - it is a separate book that public schools must buy. They could have simply included it in the teachers guide.) It then says to print the word sort and pictures off the teachers resource cd which is not included either! 2nd day- practice the sort. You can do! It is in the student workbook. 3rd day - Find words in context. No readers included. Public Schools buy the specific readers that go with the lesson. (which would be 36 for home schooler's, not 36 times each student in public school) 4th day - Apply the skill. Can do, it is included in the student workbook. 5th day - Complete the sort - Can do half of it (included in student workbook) The other half is playing a game which is on the teachers cd. (or I think the games are listed in the original book (Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction, 4th Edition (Book, CD & DVD) byDonald R. Bear - they are up to a 5th edition and are coming out with a 6th edition the end of July that is common core approved) which is a lot of theory and reading!)
I was very disappointed at this attempt to market for home schooler's. I will be buying the public school version of this (4th edition w/cd, 5th edition only has online support for extra $$ ) and making it all my self. I bought this thinking it would save time and to not have to make everything, but it doesn't include enough. I also decided that with the original (for public schools) I can customize the word sorts to my child's English program of choice. (But more work for me)
Oracle Triple CTucson, AZAge: 35-44Gender: female3 Stars Out Of 5Great idea... not so great of a deal!August 11, 2012Oracle Triple CTucson, AZAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 2Meets Expectations: 3As a classroom teacher, I used Words Their Way to teach vocabulary and spelling patterns to my first and second graders. It required a ton of prep work, but was such a powerful tool to help kids to master print and reading. When purchasing this program, I thought that it would have all the materials for each grade level readily accessible so as to minimize the planning and prep work. After all, it was almost $50. Not so! My BIG concern with this program is that although the "Homeschool Bundle" comes with a detailed, day by day teacher's guide, much of what they have recommended for activities are found on a Teachers Resource CD and Leveled Books Series. These are not included in the "Homeschool Bundle." When spending this much on a program, it would be nice if some of the components referenced in the Teacher's Guide were provided with the program. When purchasing this program, understand that you will need to supplement/purchase additional resources in order to make it work the way it was designed to work.
