I had heard the name Sojourner Truth before. All I knew about her was that she was black and she had been a slave. I am very glad that I took the time to read this biography about her.

The descriptions of her life while she was still a slave just broke my heart. I will never understand how some people can treat others as property. I loved reading about her courage in standing up for herself and claiming her freedom. She was an incredible woman and I believe that we can all benefit from reading her story.

I was fascinated to read all the details about her encounters and meetings with very famous people from her time period. It amazed me that a former slave was able to enter in with high ranking individuals.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher, through NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.

My girls and I enjoyed this read during school this year. It sure paints the picture of slavery which is really hard to read and listen too. Sojourner Truth was really brave and accomplished much. Her boldness to give speeches was inspirational to anyone who is called to do something that is not the easiest of tasks to fulfill. Translating this to the gospel, we are so thankful that the Holy Spirit gives us exactly what we need, when we need it to fulfill the calling that God places on us. He does not call us to do something that He does not equip us for.

Born into slavery Isabella was a hard worker for her master. Being a slave meant she couldn't determine her own path in life. All of her siblings either died or were sold into slavery. She had bothers and sisters that Belle had never met. It was during this period of slavery that bells mother shared with her that there is a God who hears and see you.

After many years of slavery Belle was able to leave slavery behind but in order for her to be free she had to leave her children behind. This newly discovered freedom would enable her to eventually help gain the freedom of her family.

Belle felt the call of God to go West. Psalm 39:12 ...for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all of my fathers were. So she changed her slave name Isabella to Sojourner, later she would add a last name of Truth.

Sojourner spent the rest of her life promoting the end of slavery. Later she joined the suffragette movement for equality for woman. She spent the rest of her life fighting for the equal rights for all people.

I found the book to be quite engaging in the beginning, but I got lost in all of the details toward the end. Even so it was an entertaining and enlightening about the events surrounding the issue of slavery and women rights. I recommend this book to those who desire an insight into these issues.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

What a great book "I was given this book by Barbour Publishing. I am under no obligation to post a review. It is interesting to read from her how she became the abolitionist that she was. She when on lengthy tours from place to place with many now famous people. God bless her. She was seperated from her family for most of her life. She was always willing to give a testimony of what she believed in.

Hope you will read this for yourself.

The first book in this series is about the life of Sojourner Truth. It was fitting that it was released for Black History Month. I was very excited to get it in time to read it during February. As an adult I really enjoyed learning about her story through this book. I had only read blurbs about her in history books when I was a student. She lived a fascinating life, impacted everyone that she came in contact with, and met many amazing people along the way. She did remarkable things in a time when both slaves and women were disregarded as nothing. Her faith and message were world changing and her life exemplified the character that God shows us in His Word.
