    WOMAN OF COURAGE WANDA BRUNSTETTER

On the eve of their wedding, Amanda Pearson's fiancee calls off their wedding. Amanda decides to follow her father, Rev Pearson a Quaker minister, to a mission in the Oregon wilderness run by Rev. and Mrs. Spalding where they will teach the Indians about God.

On the 3,000 mile trek through the rough and dangerous wilderness Amanda first loses her father and soon after her guide is killed, when a tree falls on him. Amanda is then left alone to continue her journey to the Lawpi Valley.

When Amanda, herself, is injured, she wakes up to find herself at the cabin of a trapper and his Indian wife, Mary (Yellow Bird). Mary is Amanda's first convert and they become good friends. Mary's husband, and his trapper friend do not want to have anything to do with Amanda and her Bible teaching.

Will Amanda make it safely to the Lawpai Valley, so she can join Rev. and Mrs. Spalding at the mission. What other hardships, loss and life-changing experiences will Amanda and her friends encounter before they reach Lawpai Valley.

I very much enjoyed reading Women of Courage . I enjoyed the detail how life was back in 1837, when the missionaries had to travel across the tough and dangerous wilderness to reach their missions so they can teach the Indians and others about God.

I would highly recommend this book to read. This is the second time that I have read Woman of Courage and I enjoyed rereading again.

Enjoyed this book. Well written as are all of the books by this author. Only wish there were follow up books to experience some of the other character's stories.

When I order books for our church library from Christian book, I always check the comments to decided if I want to order it. I know Wanda Brunstetter's books have been Amish. Wanda Brunstetter really outdid herself in 'Woman of courage". I was unable to put it down. At the time when Jim died, I was a little disappointed. She did a wonderful job at the end of the book, in tying all the character together, even the dog and the bird. Bringing it all to a happy ending..

I've only read Wanda E. Brunstetter's contemporary Amish stories before, so a historical with a Quaker heroine sounded interesting. Toss in the Lapwai Mission which, was close enough that I learned about it during my school years, and my attention was caught. I also liked how Woman Of Courage features some rather little-known history, unless you live in the Northwest, including the Spaldings, the mission, Indian traditions, and quite a bit more.

This story populated with varied characters and filled with rich scenery. Amanda's journey encompasses many miles of travel by foot and by horse and also the Lapwai Mission area itself. Through dangers and heartbreak, Amanda and her friend Mary face things they never expected.

Amanda's faith never seems to waiver even when faced with the most trying of circumstances, and ever so slowly Buck begins to open himself little by little to that faith and to Amanda herself. I have to admit, though, that my absolute favorite character in this book was Thunder. He is protective and very loyal to his friends.

I think another thing that caught my attention is the lovely cover. It teases the reader's imagination and hints at the exciting story within.

A story of discovery, faith, loyalty, sacrifice, and love that transcends cultures. If you love Wanda E. Brunstetter or historicals or both, Woman Of Courage just might be a good pick.

(I received a copy of this book from the publisher through TBCN in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are entirely my own.)

In Woman of Courage, Wanda Brunstetter has penned an amazing, historical fiction novel of two women's brave quest through the perilous wilderness -- where dangers of wild animals, savage Indians, immoral men, and inclement weather jeopardize them on every hand.

After her fiance rejects her the night before her wedding, Amanda Pearson, a lovely young Quaker, sets off with her father on a journey through the wilderness to be a missionary to the Nez Perce Indians. On the trail Amanda is nursed back to health by Mary, an Indian woman who was kidnapped by the Blackfoot tribe years earlier. Mary is desperate to get back to her people, the Nez Perce, and together with babies in tow, they begin the long trek through the perilous, savage frontier. Amongst the dangers on the trail, Amanda finds herself engulfed in another that threatens to take her soul...a romance with a half-breed who is not of her faith.

I have read Ms. Brunstetter's Amish fiction, so when she wrote a well researched historical I was quite blown away! This exciting story of faith, hope, courage, and redemption is her best work in my opinion, and a must read for all lovers of historical fiction!
