I just finished reading Cindy Woodsmall and Miriam Flaud's book, "Plain Wisdom" and I will say I enjoyed the book very much. "Plain Wisdom" gives you insight into the Amish life and culture told a Miriam an Amish women, herself. The author Cindy Woodsmall shares her experiences of visiting the Amish household and Miriam shares personal experiences of her life and faith. The books shows a beautiful picture of two lives lived by faith. Even though their lives are miles are apart. One life is plain and the other is full of today's technology, God is woven in the center of both. The book shares Amish recipes and traditions, which is always a treat. This book was a quick and enjoyable read. I would recommend this book or any of Cindy Woodsmall's books for that matter. Cindy Woodsmall is an author who writes Amish fiction. Miriam Flaud is an old order Amish woman. They live two completely different lifestyles, and they came together to write this book, "Plain Wisdom". This is a unique book, and certainly a treat for anyone who enjoys reading about the Amish lifestyle. These two women met each other several years ago, and began a friendship that has grown closer over the years. As they have learned more about each other's lives, they realize that they both look to God to guide them through life's challenges and celebrations. Each chapter begins with a relevant scripture; the chapters are short and each have a topic that the two women then address individually as to how it affects their lives. There are many heartwarming stories, delicious recipes scattered throughout, and a discussion guide in the back of the book. By the end of the book, it is obvious that these women have more in common than they (and we) thought. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I hope that these two talented friends will write more!

    The Blurb:

Two friends from different worlds–one Old Order Amish, one Englischer–share the truths that bring them together.

Best-selling novelist Cindy Woodsmall might seem to have little in common with Miriam Flaud, a woman immersed in the culture of Old Order Amish. But with nine children and almost 60 years of marriage between them, Cindy and Miriam both have found the secrets to facing life with strength and grace. Whether enduring financial setbacks, celebrating new babies and times of prosperity, grieving the crushing losses in the deaths of family and friends, or facing disappointments with their respective communities–through it all they find guidance for each day by looking to God.

With poignant recollections, unexpected insights, and humorous tales, the two women welcome you into their unique friendship. You'll also gain a rare glimpse into the traditions and ways of the Amish as Miriam recalls special occasions and shares family recipes throughout the book.

Plain Wisdom is a heartwarming celebration of God, womanhood, and the search for beauty that unites us all. So grab your cup and your quilt and settle in for a soul-comforting read with Plain Wisdom.

    My Review:

I felt that I was sitting around a table visiting with these ladies as I read this book. I laughed and cried with them as stories were told. Some stories brought me pause as I stopped to think about the truth of what was being said.

The book is sectioned into these topics: The Rhythm of Life; Timeless Beginnings;Challenges Great and Small; Laughter In Odd Places; Beautiful, Ashes, and Things Between; In His Hands; The Shapes of Tomorrow. Each topic has short chapters within. The chapters are quick to read, and I have been found reading them as I cook supper at night. One of my favorite chapters is Laundry, Anyone? This story by Cindy was easy to relate to. Being a family of 7 we tend to have a lot of laundry, but when we moved into the place we now live in, I had to wait two weeks for the washer and dryer to be set-up. While I waited all of my laundry baskets, as well as, my bathtub were quickly filling up with dirty clothes. I was so glad to have my washer and dryer back in service after those two weeks I happily put them to work. It took 2 or 3 days to get completely caught up, but I didn't mind. It was pleasing to see the piles diminishing and the bottom of my tub again!

The book also includes recipes which range from main dishes to deserts that I am looking forward to trying.

Plain Wisdom is a unique book authored by two friends Cindy Woodsmall and Miriam Flaud. Who come from two different backgrounds; Cindy is an "Englischer" and Miriam is an Old Order Amish.

I recommend Plain Wisdom to anyone, but especially those who are thinking about marrying, or have been married 1 day or 50 years. I haven't been blessed with an older women to mentor me, but Cindy's and Miriam's advice is like having two mentors with years of wisdom and experience.

As a church librarian, I can't wait to share this book with my Amish fiction lovers. Many of these ladies are often reluctant to read non-fiction, but I think they will love the true stories of Miriam Flaud's life and will relate to the stories of Cindy Woodsmall's life.

Plain Wisdom adds a depth of knowledge and understanding to every Amish fiction book I have ever read and the truths both women expressed will apply to every woman's life.

In fact, men can also enjoy the book. My husband was home sick and picked it up and read several chapters. He was quoting one of the tales from it later on in the week!

Waterbrook Multnomah Publishers provided me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review but I will buy copies for my mother, mother-in-law, an church library!

What things do an Old Order Amish woman and a modern American woman have in common? Amazingly, they have quite a bit in common!

This book is a series of short 'essays' on topics by Cindy Woodsmall and her Old Order Amish friend Miriam Flaud. Each woman gives us a window into her life on various subjects. At the beginning of each chapter Cindy explains some of the Amish ways and beliefs.

I found this book very endearing and easy to pick up at any time and read short segments when I had a few spare moments. I especially enjoyed the stories of when the two women did things together and how amazing it is to me that they can be such good friends despite living very different lives.

I was given this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
