Tell us a little about yourself. I am a behavioral neuroscientist currently teaching in the Psychology Department at Wheaton College. I have a PhD in Biopsychology and have been researching the brain and teaching courses in neuroscience and psychopharmacology for twenty years.
What was your motivation behind this project? This project came out of a course I taught at Wheaton titled 'Men and Addictions'. The book focuses on one part of the course (sexual addictions) which was the most interesting to students. Also, the prevalence of pornography in our hype-sexual culture has wounded men and women significantly.
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? I hope that readers will gain a better understanding of how we are made as bio-pyscho-social-spiritual unities, and how that plays out from a neurological perspective. My hope is that this knowledge, along with my view of sexuality as inherently rooted in the relational image of God and in our need for intimacy, will help men discover why pornography can hold such power over them. For those not struggling with pornography, I hope it gives them greater compassion for those caught up in pornography.
How were you personally impacted by working on this project? This was a hard book to write, but I felt called and convicted to write it.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? My favorite fiction author is JRR Tolkien, and my favorite musical artists are Phil Keaggy and U2.
Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know: I have a fantastic wife and three children (2 girls, 1 boy).
