Got this series for my 8-year-old, horse crazy daughter.
The pros are that the books (covers) are beautiful and the information and detail about horses is rich!
Unfortunately, the theme of divorce upset my daughter enough to stop reading at Book 7. She says Hawk's and Sal's parents are divorced and that the character Summer expresses her desire for her parents to be divorced, something "all parents do sooner or later," with things working out great for the children involved--something about children benefitting from their parents' overcompensating for breaking up the family.
I'm not sure how, if at all, the author sheds the proper light on divorce to combat Summer's ignorant remark, but my daughter found it bothersome.
Another item that might be of concern to parents has to do with the pre-teen (?) dating drama featured in Book 7, I believe.
It's really too bad that because of the above-mentioned points, she set the books aside. :(
These books are a great choice for any Christian girl. I have now read all eight books through three times I love them so much! I like how Dandi Dailey Mackall deals with tough issues. Winnie is "real" in this series--she deals with everyday problems with God's help. I learned a lot about horses from reading these books, and not just standard info--there's a lot of extremely helpful (but uncommon) horse infomation in them. There is also helpful info about fish, birds, dogs, and cats in here as well. These books have absolutely beautiful covers and chapter headings and a horse glossary in the back explaining horse behavior, tack, coat patterns, etc. You don't necessarily need to be a horse lover to enjoy this series, though. I also think that teenagers would enjoy this book too, even though they say it's for 8-12 year olds. Overall, a great series.
This is a great series with memorable and lovable characters, perfect for horse crazy girls or reluctant readers. Definitely one you'll read more than once. I would go with the older editions personally, because these new covers are much too juvenile looking for the depth of the story, in my opinion. (Don't judge a book by it's cover, as they say!) Highly recommended!!
This series is a Godsend! My 10 yr old daughter has all 8 books and loves them.It is so hard nowadays to find good christian reading. With my daughters love of horses and our christian faith this was a perfect match.I recently emailed the author to see if she had plans for any more books after # 8,so far she dosent, but she recommended the Horsefeather series and my daughter is currently reading those and enjoying them. She also has written a new series-Starlight Animal Rescue that is also wonderful.I never write reviews but feel I had too for these books! Enjoy!
