Cossette Consistently Brings the Old Testament to Life in an Engrossing, Fresh New Way

Alanah, a Canaanite, is no stranger to fighting and survival. When her family is killed in battle with the Hebrews, she disguises herself and sneaks onto the battlefield to avenge her family. The one thing she never counted on was surviving.

Tobiah, a Hebrew warrior, is shocked to find an unconscious, wounded woman among the Canaanite casualties. Compelled to bring her to a Hebrew healer back at their camp, he is soon confronted with a truth he can't ignore: the only way to protect this enemy is to marry her.

Unused to being weak and vulnerable, Alanah submits to the marriage--for now. As she comes to know and respect Tobiah and his people, however, she begins to second-guess her plans of escape. But when her past has painfully unanticipated consequences, the tentative peace she's found with Tobiah, the Hebrews, and Yahweh is shaken to the core. Can Alanah's fierce heart and strength withstand the ensuing threats to her life and all she's come to love?

Author Bio

When she is not homeschooling her two sweet kids (with a full pot of coffee at hand), Connilyn Cossette is scribbling notes on spare paper, mumbling about her imaginary friends, and reading obscure, out-of-print history books. There is nothing she likes better than digging into the rich, ancient world of the Bible and uncovering buried gems of grace that point toward Jesus. Although a Pacific Northwest native, she now lives near Dallas, Texas. Connect with her at www.connilyncossette.com.

Author Connilyn Cossette brilliantly brings the Out From Egypt series to a close with Wings of the Wind. There were so many excellent elements to this story. First, the characterization. Alanah, the enemy, was written in such a way that I was totally on her side. The total honesty that I got from knowing her thoughts in this first person narrative drew me to her. I felt her pain, was amazed at her strength, and experienced her joy. I also loved Tobiah for his honesty and strength of character. It was also a pleasure to spend time with characters from the previous books.

Secondly, the descriptive passages were excellent. Cossette makes the reader feel the pain of a viper bite, the horror of living in Jericho as the walls fell, and the majesty of Yahweh dwelling in the midst of His people in the form of a cloud.

Finally, the lessons learned through the course of the story were substantive. Lessons of forgiveness, redemption, and God's sovereignty were beautifully woven throughout the book.

This book is why I love biblical fiction. Doing life with the Israelites as they neared the end of their wandering really brought this portion of Scripture to life for me. I highly recommend it.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Bethany House, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.

What an interesting angle to approach these Bible stories! I applaud Connilyn Cossette's imagination and creativity - and even more so, her authentic retelling of some incredible Biblical events. "Wings of the Wind" is told from the unlikely angle of Alanah, a Canaanite on the wrong side of a battle against the Hebrews.

Captured after the battle, Alanah knows what happens to women on the battlefield and resigns herself to a horrid fate. Tobiah, a Hebrew warrior, knows that the badly injured, female archer will likely not survive the day if he doesn't act. Compelled to save her, he does the only thing he can do and marries her.

A mortified Alanah finds herself married to her enemy. A fate like this she could have never imagined. She expected death. Torture. Rape. She did not expect to find compassion and life. Wary and distrustful, Alanah struggles to escape and then finally understand the strange people and their terrifyingly powerful God.

This was another amazing installment in the "Out from Egypt" series. I would highly recommend this book as well as the series in its entirity.

Thank-you to Graf Martin Communications and Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this amazing book.

This was the third novel in the "Out From Egypt" series. I loved the first two books and I was excited to read this one and hesitant as well because it takes place 40 years after the second book. I wanted to read more about Shira and Kiya and I wasn't sure how I would feel about new characters. The book took a few chapters to grow on me. I was excited to read Shira's name and I'm glad we got to read about some of our favorite characters from the series. Alanah was a great character. I loved reading her journey and watching her develop as a character. Moriyah was another great character that as a reader you come to care about. The journey the characters went on was unexpected, exciting, and emotional. As a reader I didn't want to put the book down because I wanted to know what would happen next. I had an idea of how it would end, but the journey to that point was unexpected and I love being surprised as a reader. This was a great ending to a wonderful series. I didn't want the book to end. I highly recommend not only this novel, but the entire series and I look forward to reading more from Connilyn Cossette.

I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishers for my honest review.

This author has an amazing gift for bringing biblical stories to life. Yes, she uses some poetic license to fill in the blanks, but she still stays true to scripture. I can't imagine the amounts of research she had to do in order to present this time period -- the customs and culture and Mosaic Law -- in such vivid detail It's quite breathtaking!

As is the romance. Seriously -- who would think to center a love story around the end of the forty year trek through the wilderness? One of the most blood-thirsty and violent times in Old Testament history. And yet, Alanah and Tobiah's relationship blossoms with such sweet tenderness despite the chaos around them.

I love Alanah's conversion story. Her life changes when she opens her heart to the Voice of Yahweh. All the neglect and abuse washes away as she finally accepts that she is cherished. Both by God and Tobiah. But don't expect a happily ever after to come easily! The plot takes an unexpected twist and I am amazed at the way Cossette weaves Alanah's story into scripture. Intense page-turning stuff worthy of many gasp-out-loud moments! A stunning reimagining of a pivotal time in biblical history.

Wings of the Wind is exciting with lots of action! This is the third book in the Wings of the Wind series and I had not read the first two books but it was fine as a stand alone! Alanah, the leading female, is a Canaanite maiden who disguises herself and goes to battle to avenge her father and brothers' deaths but also hoping to be killed rather than having to become a prostitute to support herself. Tobiah is a Hebrew warrior who finds the wounded female on the battlefield and brings her to a healer. Alanah is used to working hard in the fields to grow food ad is amazed at the delicious manna that appears each morning. Connilyn Cossette gives you a picture of what life might have been like for the Hebrews as they wandered in the wilderness but also of the wicked Canaanite life and how Rahab might have come to be saved when Jericho fell. The descriptions of some of the atrocities of Canaan are difficult to read but they show how brutal they were. I highly recommend Wings of the Wind to anyone who enjoys Biblical fiction. It will give you a new look at how life really was in that time period. I won my copy of Wings of the Wind in a Goodreads giveaway. This is my honest opinion.
