Penny married Trent at a young age and cut all ties with her family. He was physically and emotionally abusive after they got married. An accident at work left Trent temporarily blind and allowed Penny to get out of the house, find a job and make some friends. The women she met became her protectors and made sure she was taken care of. While her husband was blind Penny found out that the one thing she wanted was finally coming true-a baby of her own. Through the courage of her friends and fear for her baby Penny managed to stand up for herself and her baby and take the first step in making a new life for her and her son.
This book was a heart breaking story of an abused women's life. I cannot imagine the range of emotions that Penny experienced and courage it took to do what needed to be done and the friendship from her friends that kept standing by her no matter what she said or did.

Little did I know what a fantastic find I had! To see another book by Gina Holmes made me quite excited to read it, and I was not disappointed.
Without giving details away, I will say each main character in the book was well developed and I felt as if I were maybe not a full part of the story, but a fly on the wall observing it all. Definitely felt the emotions involved when there was emotional and/or physical pain. All through the book, I could not help but thank God that my life is completely different from the main character.
This book did not make me cry as the first book did; however, there were definite emotions involved and I would recommend both this book and the author to anyone! Now to go read her 2nd book!!
Thursday44 Stars Out Of 5Good Read, Touching SubjectJune 9, 2013Thursday4Quality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Penny elopes with the cowboy of her dreams and finds a less than perfect life. Ten years later, she is friendless, alienated from her family, and struggling to find food. All that changes when an accident at her husband's work causes his temporary blindness, and Penny goes to the local food shelter. But the catalyst occurs when Penny discovers she is pregnant. Now it is up to her to use her new found freedom to keep herself and her child safe.
This is a heart rending story which accurately shows the confusion and pain which comes from being in an abusive relationship. The writing is compelling, and sprinkled with the companionship which can be found when people are willing to reach out to each other.
bookwormPennsylvaniaAge: 25-34Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Great BookJune 9, 2013bookwormPennsylvaniaAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Though this book is not the type I usually read, I found it to be a great book that I could not put down until it was finished. It is not an easy book to read because it is about Gina, a wife who has a violent husband, however, these stories need to be written/read because there are many people who are victims of domestic violence like Gina. At first, Gina is a skittish woman with depression and low self-esteem, but with the help from two women, she learns to stand up to her husband for the sake of herself and infant son. I think the author did a good job stressing the importance of establishing boundaries in relationships and getting out of bad ones. I also appreciated the appendix in the back of the book because I know that some readers will find it helpful. This appendix had resources that readers can use to find more information about getting out of bad relationships and which organizations to contact to help them out of these types of situations. I think this is a book that anyone in a relationship should read.

This book centers around a woman named Penny Carson and the abuse she went through with her husband, Trent. Throughout her struggles, she meets two very different ladies. They all end up being very good friends even though they are all so different from each other. I felt like I was seeing Penny's struggles with abuse first hand. This book really opened my eyes to what some woman go through and how they are so disillusioned that they somehow deserve this!
I would recommend this book to anyone! Gina Holmes is a very good author. She made this book very easy to read.
