What can Jezebel, the Bibles wickedest queen, reveal about Gods holiness and power and even about his sense of humor? What about the Woman at the Wellthe one with five husbands and a live-in lover? And what of the prostitute whose tears bathe the feet of Jesus in front of people who despise her?
There are also "wicked good" women like Deborah, Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Esther, Mary, and more. What do their lives tell us about Gods invincible love and his determined plan to save us?
In Wicked Women of the Bible Ann Spangler tells the stories of twenty wicked and "wicked good" women in greater detail. At the end of each story, Ann provides a brief section including additional historical and cultural background as well as a brief Bible study in order to enhance the books appeal to both individuals and groups.
The stories of these women of the Bible reveal a God who is not above it all but who stoops down to meet us where we are in order to extend his love and mercy.
Ann Spangler is an award-winning writer and the author of many bestselling books, including Praying the Names of Jesus and The One Year Devotions for Women. She is also coauthor of Women of the Bible and Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus and the general editor of the Names of God Bible. Anns fascination with and love of Scripture have resulted in books that have opened the Bible to a wide range of readers. She and her two daughters live in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The women arent all wicked, some live in wicked times, others had wicked things done to them. There are 20 womens stories from Scripture. Your story may be in included, as a reflection of one of these women. There are life lessons to be mined in this book.
It reads like fiction; you get drawn into the story of each woman. The footnotes are worth reading and give valuable insight. Each story ends with two sections; The Times, which gives such great background information, and The Takeaway questions to ponder.
There are the truly wicked, such as Jezebel who discovered rather too late that it simply doesnt pay to fight with God. The wicked smart Abigail who bears the burden of her foolish husband, her quick thinking saved the lives of her household. Then there is the wicked crazy, Mary Magdalene, a tortured soul whose mind has already descended to hell while her body lives on earth. Jesus delivers her from demon possession and all she wants to do is serve Him. Not only does she perfume Jesus feet and wipe them with her tears, hers is the first name He speaks after leaving the tomb.
I particularly enjoyed the authors insight and background information. These women came alive for me in this book. Read a few stories, or the entire book, you will be richer for having done so.
The Phone Tree EdifierAtlanta, GAAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5A Phone Tree Book Review|Wicked Women of the BibleJanuary 13, 2016The Phone Tree EdifierAtlanta, GAAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Wicked can be defined in many ways, based on Spanglers revealed definitions. In her book Wicked Women of the Bible, she introduced the concept of wicked from two unique perspectives. She showed how, whether wicked good or wicked bad, the women of the Bible had a story to tell that was both purposed and meaningful.
Typically, I am not a huge fan of authors taking narrative liberties with Biblical content. I feel that it sometimes skews the truth of Gods word and confuses the reader. In this book, however, I felt that Spangler did an acceptable job of presenting each womans story. Her writing was considerate and thought-provoking. I loved her inclusion of the times, the takeaway questions, a Scriptural index, and highlights from her book Women of the Bible.
I could easily see this book being a Christian book club feature or the subject of a womens Bible study class.

Aisha5 Stars Out Of 5Bible Study Wicked Women of the BibleDecember 15, 2015AishaQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I loved it. I thought it was an interesting way to get a woman like me to read the Bible more. It was interesting to learn about so many women in the Bible that I had never heard of. The fact the each person I read about could relate to something about me has made me think of my life and the outcomes. Life has journeys just like the women in the Bible but if you learn from them just like these women it will be the best adventure ever. Thank you Miss Ann Spangler for this. I can't wait for the next book to read and the answer the questions again. I also recommended this book to the Pastor's Wife and she was intrigued with it.
Half pint5 Stars Out Of 5Wicked Women of the BibleNovember 18, 2015Half pintQuality: 0Value: 0Meets Expectations: 0This book is well written. I love how the author describes their lives and compares it with what we are going through today.
lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5enjoyed it!November 13, 2015lcjohnson1988IndianaAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4The first point Ann brings to light is both the negative definition of the word wicked and the way it is used as slang. Such as that movie was wicked I want to see it again! So the characters we learn about in the study are those women who were wicked and displeased God. We also learn of wickedly awesome women we may want to be like as we learn from them in the Bible.
I learned Ann has written other books along this line and that she isnt a trained theologian, but a woman who desires to help women draw near to the Author of the Bible. Like Ann shares with us, in ancient times stories were passed down orally from one generation to the next. God in His sovereignty in His time took the oral tradition and brought it to print down through generations to today. What a God He is who loves us before we loved Him, and He continues to invite us to sit at His feet and learn.
Each chapter quotes from the Bible and then readers can read a fictionalized account that might help them cement the women studied in their minds and hearts. Afterwards, we are told a little about the time in which the people lived and the event took place. Let us never forget these were real people who lived, loved, followed God or disobeyed Him among other actions.
Whether readers do this study in a group setting or alone with the Lord, there are questions which help us contemplate, remember and encourage us to grow in Him. The study isnt just for head knowledge, but for heart knowledge leading to a life that is transformed by His Word.
There are 20 chapters with which to enjoy, be encouraged or exhorted. We can learn from those who were wicked as in evil as well as we can learn from those who just were women who chose to do or say as He directed. I hope that you will delve into the 20 women Ann highlights and consider sharing what the Lord shows you with another person who wants to grow with you using this study. The study is not an end-all, but a beginning. When you are done, consider studying further any of the women who you learned from and want to know more about from the Bible.
