Centuries later, God continues to use Paul to capture others. John Piper shares 30 of his own reasons about why he loves the Apostle Paul in this new book. Divided into seven parts, with each part covering an aspect of who Paul was (such as his personal life and sacrifice, passion for people, love for God and others, and ultimately his commitment to the gospel) Piper draws attention to the importance of who Paul is.

This book is different than most of John Piper's previous books. First, it is deeply personal as he shares some of his own struggles and life and how reading God's words through Paul guided and aided him. Second, this book reads like Joseph Ellis' American Sphinx (a biography of Thomas Jefferson) which is not a biography of one's life, but an analysis of who the person was (in character). Finally, this book does not carry the 'profundity' as many of his other books. For most who know the Apostle Paul, much of what Piper says won't be a surprise. Instead, he uses some of the profound concepts from previous books and demonstrates how Paul fulfills those. As a result, readers grasp who Paul is and have the opportunity to dwell on concepts of Paul's life, like his suffering, that we take for granted as Christians.

While fixating on Paul, Piper does so in a way that causes readers to consider who God is and not only love Paul, but love God. I am not going to say this is a must-read book like some of his other works, but it is certainly one that is worthwhile for those who desire to know more about Paul and grow in their personal walk.
