Mary Connealy's books are always ones I must read. I love the blend of faith, romance, and adventure with swoony heroes and strong women. I was delighted to discover this book takes us back to the Two Harts Ranch that was a part of The Lumber Baron's Daughters series. Though not main characters in Whispers of Fortune, it was fun to reconnect with Zane Hart and sisters Michelle, Jilly, and Laura. Two Harts Ranch has been expanded into a boarding school for orphans. Two of them, Thayne and Lock MacKenzie, ages 16 and 14, left their home in New York and traveled on an Orphan Train to California. They had a journal from their grandfather that mentioned treasure which whetted their imaginations. When their older brother, Brody, returned home from college to find the boys missing, he soon was on their trail. The Hart ranch is being run by Josh and his sisters Annie and Ellie. Brody's meeting wih them was memorable. You might guess that with a rumored treasure there would be others hunting who were less than honorable, even downright despicable. Whispers of Fortune is a fun book to read. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series to continue the story. This is definitely a series that needs to be read in order and in its entirety. Treasure and a western, what more could you ask for? This is the story of the Hart family who run an orphanage on the Two Harts Ranch and the MacKenzie brothers (two who are constantly getting into trouble). Brody comes searching for his brothers and meets Ellie who helps run the ranch and school. Together they try to solve the clues to find the treasure. Full of mystery, suspense, romance, inspiration, and humor. Looking forward to the next book in the series. I love the descriptions of the western scenery.

Lost treasure, missing orphans, vengeful villains and a full cast of characters collide with the Golden State Treasure debut. Book one will not be enough to satisfy readers as the threads of the tale continue with more surprises, strong faith elements and tough, compassionate families in wild California terrain.

The MacKenzie men have heard about the MacKenzie treasure most of their lives. First, the grandfather had gone in search of treasure and never returned. However, he did mail a journal to his son that supposedly would help the son find it. After abandoning his family several times to search for the treasure, the son finally gave up and came home to die. His oldest son, Brody, finished medical school at his mother's insistence and got home only to learn that his mother had died, his younger brothers, still in their teens, had run away, and their father was dying. After burying his father, Brody went in search of his young brothers. Having heard their father talk about the treasure so much, Brody was certain his brothers had gone to California. Although skeptical about the MacKenzie treasure, he had to find his brothers. That part was relatively easy but trying to convince them to forget the rumored treasure and return with him to Boston where he had a job waiting was a totally different story. To add to the excitement and thrills of a treasure hunt, Brody meets a young woman who he cannot get out of his mind. Then there were the criminals that ramped up the action and suspense. If a treasure exists, they intend to make it theirs. If you have read any books by Mary Connealy, you know that she is going to keep things stirred up all the way through the story. This one is no exception.
