Kim5 Stars Out Of 540 Day Sugar Fast-a great book!February 15, 2020KimQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5In Wendys book, The 40 -Day Sugar Fast, we learn the value of fasting from sugar in order to free up our bodies, minds, and spirits to focus more and more on Jesus each day. As she guides us through the initial sugar withdrawal in each daily chapter, we are invited to also join in on the Facebook 40 day fast, where we can read what others are learning on their journeys, and share our own.
Besides using sugar as a crutch, we all go to other idols like shopping, social media, etc. possibly alcohol., instead of turning to Jesus and Gods Word to comfort, heal, and encourage ourselves. Wendys book guides us through the process of going to Jesus instead of these idols. Her book encourages us to ask God to reveal those things to us.
I appreciate how Wendy encourages and speaks the truth via Gods Word. She does not sugar coat her writing. She is a great teacher and gives transparent examples from her own life.
The benefits for me, personally, were better health, no joint pain, and improved emotional well being. God also revealed to me my tendency to be soothed by games on my phone, social media, and TV. He also is teaching me how to be more positive in my thought life.
I plan to read through this book at intervals throughout the year and would highly recommend the book to anyone wanting to go deeper in relationship with God and see His more for themselves!
Academy2525 Stars Out Of 5An excellent resource!February 7, 2020Academy252Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5The title of this book says that it is a 40 day fast from sugar but it is SO MUCH MORE. As the subtitle informs us, it is about both physical and spiritual transformation and that is not an exaggeration. It is set up as a devotional style book to be read each day during your fast. The books is about so much more than sugar. It is very spiritually informative and full of scripture on fasting and overcoming the roadblocks that stand between us and a deeper relationship with Christ.
This book is not a diet but you might lose weight, it is not a quick fix but a guide to finding a new way of living our lives free from the sin that so easily besets us. It is about the addictions in our lives that hinder our daily walk with Christ and how we can break down those walls. Speake is very straightforward in her approach. She guides us with Biblical truth and honesty about the choices we make and how they hurt us. She shares how we can be over-comers in this fight. She ends each day with a prayer to encourage us to bring everything before the Father.
In a world that worships food and foodie endeavors this is a way to shake loose from the things that fill our social media, emails, television screens and more. It is a way time to help us focus on something real and meaningful. It guides us to seek the things that are lasting. It is about food that never runs out and water that never lets us thirst again.
Dr DaveWilliston, FLAge: Over 65Gender: Male4 Stars Out Of 5Excellent DevotionalJanuary 14, 2020Dr DaveWilliston, FLAge: Over 65Gender: MaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4NOTE: This review was written by my wife, Ellie Marrandette. Ellie is a certified nutritionist and Bible teacher and the author of Life's Too Short to Eat Bad Cheese: Nutritional & Life Lessons God Teaches Us. She is the founder of New Creations Ministries.
In The 40-Day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation, author Wendy Speake focuses on sugary foods as idols. Then, in a day-by-day devotional, urges the reader to replace sugary food with Jesus. I heartily agree that Jesus Christ should always be Lord of our lives. Her sugar theme could be easily substituted for smoking, alcohol, television, sports or the myriad of other idols prevalent in today's society.
Gratefully, this isn't simply another diet book. The reader won't find a regimented diet plan or recipes from Ms. Speake. This has more to do with searching our soul for Biblical motivation to replace today's false idols with Christ. Through forty-one beautifully written, inspirational and motivational devotions, Ms. Speake keeps her reader focused on Christ and away from the addiction of sugar.
As a Christian, I enjoyed reading The 40-Day Sugar Fast as a devotional and it must be understood that this is devotional in content. It is obvious the author put a lot of prayer and thought into each chapter. As a Counselor and certified nutritionist, however, I became concerned. It wasn't until chapter sixteen, Ms. Speake finally clarified: There's nothing wrong with sweet treats. Good. God created natural sugar. By insinuating sugar is bad, without clarification, might insinuate God created something bad which is against His Nature. Glucose, a sugar, is necessary for brain function. I also found some of her pantry recommendations to be less than beneficial. Such suggestions as beef jerky, processed sandwich meat and salt are high in sodium and could be harmful to those with heart conditions.
Ms. Speake acknowledges in Appendix B, she doesn't focus on physiological or scientific reasons why we become addicted to sugar. That statement also should have been at the beginning of the book. What I definitely endorse through her writing is her encouragement and motivation - honoring our LORD is always better than sugar!
If you're looking for the motivation to pursue a healthier lifestyle, I would definitely recommend The 40-Day Sugar Fast. It will steer you along the right path.

Are we using other things to satisfy a longing when God is truly the answer? Are we turning to sugar, other foods, or even worldly distractions to satisfy those longings? The title of this book implies that this book deals totally on a sugar fast but The 40-Day Sugar Fast goes much deeper than that. Yes, sugar and sweets can be an addiction but author Wendy Speake shows us that sugar is just one of many things that we often expect will satisfy. What we really need, however, is a total reliance on Jesus Christ to fulfill our needs.
As you take part in this sugar fast, you will find yourself feeling better physically and stronger spiritually. Speake shares motivational thoughts, Bible scripture, and suggested prayers as she walks us through this 40 day fast and, on page 52, she reminds us that "Each day, as you go to Him rather than to food, the Spirit of God gives you srength that those empty calories never could!"
So, if you want to become healthier in both body and spirit, you will certainly benefit from reading and following The 40-Day Sugar Fast.
I received a copy of this book from Baker Books and was under no obligation to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts.
Wendi4 Stars Out Of 5hope for my sugar battlegroundJanuary 3, 2020WendiQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I have a long-standing love affair with sugar. I inherited a wicked sweet tooth from my dad and an affection for all things chocolate from my mom. There is just one very big problem. As much as I love sugar, it does not love me back. In fact, it is rather cruel, unkind, and frighteningly damaging to my physical body!
Especially after an indulgent holiday season, the battle begins again in my head. How can I make better choices? What is the best way to care for my 50-something body responsibly? I know sugar is my fiercest enemy, but do I really need to give it up entirely? Can I find a happy medium, an "everything in moderation" place to land?
I never know the right answer. Ever. I swing from one extreme tactic to another or give up entirely and binge on all the wrong things. The vicious cycle leaves me feeling defeated, helpless, confused, and quite honestly, shockingly alarmed by how much this dialogue raging in my head consumes me!
I gulp back the realization. It scares me to see the breadth and depth of this life-long wrestle. Fear grips me as I wonder if the enemy of my soul has been using this battleground to keep me chasing my own tail for far too long!
I reach in the only direction I know I can trust. I cry out to the LORD to help me solve this riddle once and for all!
I believe part of His answer is coming in Wendy Speake's new book (releasing in just a few days!), "The 40-day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation," published by Baker Books.
Wendy shares many of the same struggles with sugar. She holds very strong convictions about which practical changes and disciplines in her diet will serve her best, physically and otherwise. But this book is not a "how to" guide. Although Wendy offers a few practical suggestions, her book does not give anyone a road map or a diet plan. There are no strict instructions. No promises or guarantees.
Instead, this book holds a precious invitation: to commit the next forty days to focused conversation with the LORD, to ask Him for His plan for me, as I navigate my own very personal battle with sugar (and/or the ways the enemy is using sugar to defeat me).
If sugar is my battleground, then the welcome is clear. Take a break! Retreat from the heat of the battle to a safe place. Rest. Check in with my Commanding Officer. Receive some fresh training and perspective. Be still and listen for His next steps of instruction. Trust Him to show me His path and to equip me to succeed in that plan!
I appreciate so many details about the layout of Wendy's book. She welcomes us to journey with her for forty days, the same amount of time the LORD JESUS spent in the wilderness, battling the same enemy of our souls! Each day, just as JESUS did, she incorporates Scripture to speak truth, life, and allegiance to the Father into our growth process. She encourages deep thought and prayer. And she shares her own personal stories to let us know we are not alone in the fight!
I love that the desired result is not a specific weight goal or fitness accomplishment. More than anything else, Wendy longs for us to tune our hearts to the Savior, to experience a deeper and truer relationship with Him. She is confident that this intimate dialogue will yield His very best plan for each of us to navigate whatever battleground we face. Regardless of the specific outcome, His desire is always that we rest in His care, trust and obey as He leads, and be open to receive His most precious gifts, ones we will recognize more clearly as we lean on Him and not ourselves!
It is good to have a frame for this journey, a defined forty days of focused dialogue with the LORD about a specific battle. This marked endpoint inspires confidence that the commitment is "doable!" But Wendy is also praying the discipline to hush all other voices and hear only His will continue long after forty days. She firmly believes time invested alone with the LORD will not only bring victory in our battles but lasting transformation in our relationship with Him!
Do you have a struggle that consumes you more than it should, leaving you weary or defeated longer than you realize? Would it help you to know the LORD cares about those challenges? That He longs for you to simply ask Him what to do next? Even if sugar is not your fiercest enemy, there are thought-provoking and deeply encouraging truths worth pondering in Wendy Speake's "The 40-Day Sugar Fast: Where Physical Detox Meets Spiritual Transformation." You will find a warm and friendly companion in Wendy. She will take you by the hand and lead you to priceless moments alone with the Savior! I am grateful for her passion that inspires others to embark on this journey.
I received a complimentary copy of Wendy's book from Baker Publishing, as part of their "Baker Books Bloggers" program, but my own personal response to its content is reflected in this review.
