Product Description

"If there is a loving God, then why ... ?" No matter how the question is completed, at its root lies the issue of pain. Does God order suffering? Or did he simply wind up the world's mainspring and now is watching from a distance?

In this Gold Medallion Award-winning book, now revised and updated, Where is God When It Hurts reveals a God who is neither capricious nor unconcerned. Using examples from the Bible and from his own experiences, Yancey looks at pain---physical, emotional, and spiritual---and helps us understand why we suffer. Includes discussion guide.

Publisher's Description

If there is a loving God, then why is it that … ? You’ve heard that question, perhaps asked it yourself. No matter how you complete it, at its root lies the issue of pain. Does God order our suffering? Does he decree an abusive childhood, orchestrate a jet crash, steer a tornado through a community? Or did he simply wind up the world’s mainspring and now is watching from a distance? In this Gold Medallion Award–winning book, Philip Yancey reveals a God who is neither capricious nor unconcerned. Using examples from the Bible and from his own experiences, Yancey looks at pain—physical, emotional, and spiritual—and helps us understand why we suffer. Where Is God When It Hurts? will speak to those for whom life sometimes just doesn’t make sense. And it will help equip anyone who wants to reach out to someone in pain but just doesn’t know what to say.

This book is excellent in every way. I have purchased a number of them over the years and have given them as

gifts to people who were suffering and needed the message it delivers. This one was requested by my cousin

who is very, very ill. She has a number of Philip Yancey's books and finds them extremely helpful.

This book couldn't have been found at a better time in my daughter's and my life, as she was going through a physical crisis. She had already been through so much; we asked God why this? This book helped both of us emotionally, by strengthening our faith and helping us understand other's responses to her. It left us with more compassion for those who suffer. To God be the glory, before we even finished the book, He answered our prayers and directed her path to healing.

Awesome book!! I loved it so much that I recommended it to my small church group and we are reading it together. It really opened my eyes to God's role in the pain I have suffered in my life, and has brought me much comfort.

Still reading - but it is helping me deal with my pain by reminding me that pain is apart of growth.

Pastor is using this for discussion in Adult S.S. Class - really excellent...I read it after reading My Heart's Desire - and it underlined what I had recently learned about refocusing during times of crisis...Excellent
