This review was written for When You Are Near #1.
When You Are Near is the first book in The Brookstone Brides series, therefore the story is incomplete and left me with a lot of questions. In this book, we meet Lizzy Brookstone and her family, Wes DeShazer, along with important characters who will be focused on more in the next two books. The idea of an all-female wild west show was thrilling! This was a time when a woman's role was still solely tending to her home and family, and this story presented a different approach to Women's Suffrage.

Even though it kept me turning pages for hours, it wasn't as good as other Tracie Petterson novels. I didn't feel like I had enough time to get to know the characters or connect with any of them, which is usually the purpose of the first book in a series. It felt rushed and the romance between Lizzy and Wes was resolved, but it still seemed incomplete. Also, based on the description of the plot, I expected more mystery around the suspicious death of the Brookstone's wrangler. But instead, most of the details were found out very quickly. I was hoping to have to piece together more of the puzzle. But none of this will stop me from being a fan of Peterson's work.

I can't wait until the rest of the series is released. I have book 2 preordered and I am looking forward to reading Mary's story!

When You Are Near has mystery, murder, and romance, that said, it doesn't read like a normal Christian fiction/historical romance. I was surprised that central character Lizzy Brookstone's potential love triangle became more focused on her personal grieving journey adding layer of interest and depth I wasn't expected from the summary. This shift, I felt, allowed for more character development with the other female characters which was a refreshing change. Having the interactions with Mary, Ella, and Rebecca made the book more enjoyable and really sets up potential focuses for the later novels in this series.

Truly, this reads much more as a historical fiction than a romance with Peterson investigating grief's expressions through Lizzy, Rebecca, Mary, Wes, and Oliver's individual stories. I appreciate how while they all shared the varying losses the expressions were unique to the characters established personas.

That said, I'm not sure how to give a full review of this novel as it feels very incomplete. When You Are Near is book one of the Brookstone Brides series and it very much feels somewhere between incomplete and an excellent groundwork novel for what's to come.

The mystery of August's death, the challenge for Lizzy's heart, the future of the Extravaganza all felt like they were just starting to pick up as I closed the last page. I was left wishing I could grab the next book. Thankfully, it appears that Peterson has anticipated this desire in other readers with book 2 slated for June of 2019 and book 3 possibly slated for October, a blisteringly fast pace for most series release and lends to the possibility that Peterson has purposely interwoven the three books to function more as a single narrative over three books.

Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing if this series lives up to its strong start in When You Are Near.

    4 out of 5 stars.

An all-female Wild West show -- what a spectacular setting for a series! Loved getting an insider's view of trick-riding and managing a traveling show in 1900. Living quarters in a train car sounds so exciting (a childhood dream of mine, in fact!) But though the story begins 'on the road' in Washington DC, half of the book takes place on a Montana ranch so we get some 'real' wild west action as well!

When You Are Near is the first book in Peterson's Brookstone Brides series and the author does a great job of introducing readers to a bevy of memorable characters including the three women destined to be the heroines of their own stories. Love the way the story built, as Ella and Mary were added to the mix. These women are stronger than they realize and friendship binds them in a special way.

There's more than one dastardly villain to thwart (though I fear they will go on to wreck havoc in future books), a complicated romance to untangle and a solid faith thread that weaves it all together. A captivating start to an exciting new series.

    When you are near

I so enjoyed this book. Lizzy is a trick rider in the Brookstone Wild West Exravaganza. She longs to be back to the family's ranch but does she really want to see the man that broke her heart. Wesley is a foreman at the ranch.

The book is very inspirational with a lot of adventure. Lizzy mother is a recent widow. I loved her character. The relationship between Lizzy and mother is so awesome. Then there is Ella who is learning trick riding and trying to get away from things at home.

This a start of new series. I cannot wait until the next book comes out. I love reading about this period in time.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review. This is my own opinion.

    This was an amazing book!!

    My thoughts: 5/5 stars

Let's just talk for a sec how wrong that description is.. First off, Lizzy doesn't take over as management for the show. Her uncle still owns the show and manages it.

She's not forced to work with Wesley because of the show, HE'S NOT EVEN ON THE SHOW.

Lizzy's never torn between the two men, she knows exactly who she wants.

Ella's part is mostly right, except she's not given a job in the costume department. I'll let you find out where she starts working.

    Mary's part is right.

But all three women do not work together to find out how August died. I was left a little disappointed by that. We didn't really get into Mary seeking justice for her brother.

Anyways, on to the actual review.

The book got off to a definite Tracie Peterson start!

A woman spurned by the man she's always loved.

The man dealing with ghosts from his past.

A girl running away from a dangerous marriage.

    A woman seeking answers.

The one thing they all have in common?

They all must learn to put their trust and lean on the only One who can give them the answers they've been searching for.

I have to say, I was a little disappointed concerning the trick riding stuff. I wasn't as captivated by the details Peterson usually writes.

I was expecting to be able to see the trick riding in my head, but the writing didn't really allow for that. It was odd because this author is a favorite of mine and I can always expect good detail. Not saying there wasn't good detail through out the rest of the book, just when the girls were trick riding.

This story was amazing. When it ended I was sad. But things did turn out exactly the way I wanted, and then some!

It was a quick read for me, at least it would have been if I'd not had to take a few days off of reading. (Busy life.)

I hadn't realized how many pages slipped by until I was almost done. I was so immersed in the story, I never wanted to put it down!

Peterson's stories always leave me happy and filled with a new love for Christ.

Tracie Peterson has a way with stories. I'm always blessed by her words.

I cannot wait to read the next two in the series!!

Definitely, DEFINITELY pick this book up!! It was absolutely amazing and I hate to say goodbye to these lovely characters.
