From the bestselling author of The Secret Life of Bees, an inspiring autobiographical account of personal pain, spiritual awakening, and divine grace.
Blending her own experience with an intimate grasp of spirituality, Sue Monk Kidd relates the passionate and moving tale of her spiritual crisis, when life seemed to have lost meaning and her longing for a hasty escape from the pain yielded to a discipline of “active waiting.” Full of wisdom, poise, and grace, Kidd’s words will encourage us along our spiritual journey, toward becoming who we truly are.
Sue Monk Kidd is the author of the bestselling novels The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair, as well as the award-winning The Dance of the Dissident Daughter and God's Joyful Surprise.
"Grounded in personal experience and bolstered with classic spiritual disciplines and Scripture, this book offers an alternative to fast-fix spirituality." --Bookstore Journal
"Inspiring. Sue Monk Kidd is a direct literary descendant of Carson McCullers." --The Baltimore Sun
As I read her book, Kidd became a companion. I love having her walk with me on my journey.

DupontLos Angeles, CAAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5I've been a fan of Sue's since the late 1970's when she wrote for Guideposts magazine. I first read this book in 1991 while in the process of being "re-made" from the ground up after losing my husband, job and home in the span of 6 weeks. Day by day it helped me find the courage and strength to put one foot in front of the other.
Now I am reading it again as part of my course in becoming a Spiritual Director. The truth contained in these pages has only grown richer with the experience of the last 20-some years, and I am purchasing copies to give to my past and present leadership team for women's ministries. Ms Kidd is a rare gift.
Constance Etter5 Stars Out Of 5September 6, 2008Constance EtterI read this book 3 years ago with my Daughters of the King group, and we all loved it so much. I felt as if Sue and I were twins at times! She really grasped so overwhelmingly what it is like to feel directionless and stuck in the Le Brea tar pits of life, and of learning to wait until that time of inner formation is finished, and not jumping off the cliff until you know what is down there - a net or a pile of rocks. I loved every word of that book and am trying to get our new group here in TX to read it this next year as our growth project.
