A very sweet and romantic book but enough mystery and intrigue to make it not be too sappy! There are actually a few different mysteries going on during the book which makes you want to keep turning each page to find out more. I would definitely recommend this book.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a book that makes you think about how you are being influenced by the outside world or people in your life. This can be ministers, husbands, or relatives. It is a book that made me look at what is going on in my life.

This is about a lady that lost her husband 2 years before. She is homeschooling her children and attending a very conservative church. Almost like an Amish church but they do have electricity. The woman is in a very serious accident and her brother-in-law is called in to watch the kids. There are twists and turns in every area of this story including the brother-in-law. He doesn't realize that he has been made guardian if something happens to her since he didn't really even know the family at all.

You find that this woman is questioning the church she has been attending. She questions the man that has been leading the church. She has to dig deep inside herself and trust that God will take care of her family. She has to lend on people she didn't think she could. She has to trust.

I definitely think this book is worth reading I loved it. There is mystery and a good love story.

Miranda Hanford is not a free woman. Married at a young age to a controlling, legalistic man, she is now the widowed mother of six children. Although her husband is gone, Miranda is expected to submit to the authority of her pastor, Mason Chandler. But when Mason announces hearing "from the Lord" that all church members are to sell their property and move together to a new community, Miranda can't bring herself to go along with his plan. All she wants is to be left alone, but Mason terrifies her with threats of what will happen if she does not comply with his wishes.

Then Miranda suffers a serious injury, and Jack, the brother of her late husband, is shocked to learn that he has been appointed guardian of Miranda's children until she is well again. Even though he's only met Miranda once before, Jack is willing to help. Helping with meal preparation and homeschooling the children is one thing, but helping Miranda escape her church situation is another, especially since she's too afraid to tell Jack the truth....

I applaud Meg Moseley for delving into the topic of spiritual and psychological abuse. When Sparrows Fall is a well-crafted work of fiction, but I'm afraid it does reflect reality for many well-meaning families today. Indeed, the book contains several thinly-veiled references to philosophies espoused by extremely conservative Christian leaders. If you've spent much time poking around the Christian homeschool blogosphere, you'll catch the allusions. I could say a lot more about this topic, but in the interest of keeping this book review a book review, I'll just say that I appreciate that Meg Moseley points out that there can be a dark side behind beautiful, old-fashioned dresses; perfectly-behaved children; and humongous, smiling, homeschooling, "quiverfull" families.

The characters of Miranda and Jack are well-developed, the storyline is exciting and suspenseful, and the subject of spiritual authority is worthy of careful consideration. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

For books like this, I truly detest that "I couldn't put it down" has become such a cliché, since I can very sincerely say that I could not put this book down. Despite the reality of four small children and impending weekend company, despite the past few nights of inadequate rest, I found myself reading it start to finish in a single 24 hour day... except for that last hour, which technically belonged to the next day.

This author magically hangs flesh on the characters her words built, giving them personality and charm without using the lazy 'extended description' fallback plan, she stealthily holds back information that you feel you MUST know throughout the story so that you are never left thinking you have it all figured out, inserting the exact amount of little twists and turns to make the story pop without turning it into the convoluted, dense, heavy mess that signals someone tried way too hard to make the 'same old' different.

I identified with this mother's internal struggle of how to introduce culture to her children without also introducing her children to its more negative influences; yet, somehow I also identified with the Uncle who is appalled that the children know next to nothing about the world around them. I understood the mother's life with her 6 young children (I have four myself), but found myself wincing at the noise along with the uncle who was plunged into their midst. I laughed aloud at the reality of many young ones painted so clearly in the pages and fell in love with children that I keep thinking must have been drawn from the author's experiences. They were too true to life to have been pulled from thin air.

And so I read. And read. And read. And ignored the clock and read some more. If you happen to pick up this title, I hope you are slightly more responsible with your commitment to get a good night's rest than I am.

I got this book from Multnomah Books Blogging for Books program. I had never heard of this author, but was intrigued by the bit of synopsis provided. I am so glad I chose this book! I devoured it! First book that has grabbed me like this in a long time.

Miranda is a young widow with 6 children who lives a quiet life on land that has been in her husband's family for years. When her pastor announces that the entire church is selling their homes and moving to another state, Miranda sees it as a way out... a way for a fresh start. But then an accident occurs and her estranged brother-in-law comes to care for her and the children. Jack brings the outside world to Miranda's sheltered exsistence and threatens to unearth secrets she wants left buried.

The tension rises as Jack tries to revive what he sees as a dead existance for Miranda and her children... as Pastor Mason looms in the background like a dark cloud threatening to storm down his wrath and the law... as Miranda struggles with feelings she never thought she would have again and doesn't want to admit.

when sparrows fall is a wonderful tale of freedom... safety... and love.
