CherylProspect,KYAge: 45-54Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5You are specialFebruary 25, 2017CherylProspect,KYAge: 45-54Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is a beautiful reminder to all God's creatures how special and unique, wonderfully made, and loved you are. God knew everything about each of us before we were ever dreamed of--what we would look like, your name, your talents and passions, and so much more. He delights in you!
The writing is rhyming, making the text fun to read aloud and whimsical. The text is a super reminder to each of us that we are made in the image of God and encourages us to use the gifts and talents God gave us and to live by the words, "Love One Another". The illustrations are bright and colorful but honestly not my favorite. Catrow is a very talented artist but the illustration style just didn't appeal to me as much as I would have expected, almost messy and splotchy could describe a few of them.
Another thing that sort of stumped me and kept me from fully appreciating the text is that it refers to God dreaming a couple of times. Maybe He does but I felt that in some ways, it diminished the sovereignty of God. Overall, it isn't something that would prevent me from recommending the story and reading it to my children but it would be a conversation I would want to have with them. There were a couple of words that you might have to explain to the age child this book is recommended for, 3-8, such as refined, composed, revue, and themes. As an educator, again this doesn't overly concern me, just know that at least the first time through, you may need to have a vocab lesson.
I did receive this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review and am in no way obligated to write a positive one.
KristenGrabill, INAge: 25-34Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Beautiful StoryFebruary 23, 2017KristenGrabill, INAge: 25-34Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner is a new Christian children's book about how God made each of us unique. It was beautifully told in rhyming verse. With poignant reminders like "An exclusive design, one God refined, you're a perfectly crafted one of a kind. 'Cause when God made you, somehow God knew that the world needed someone exactly like you."
I enjoyed reading this book with my 3 year old because it has all the lessons I want him to learn. God made each and every one of us, and He made us all with different gifts and abilities. It is a lengthier read but the rhyming helps the story move along.
My only complaint? I didn't care for the pictures at all. The style was simply too busy and cluttered and not my cup of tea. Yes, it was unique, but other than that, I simply didn't like them. I rarely feel that way with children's books but it's worth mentioning for if you decide to check it out. Beautiful story. Interesting illustrations.
I received an advanced copy of this book for free from Blogging for Books in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Encouraging message with colorful illustrationsFebruary 21, 2017Debbie from ChristFocusHarrison, ARAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5"When God Made You" is a Christian children's book for ages 3 to 7. It reminds me of Dr. Seuss' books. The rhyming text has a nice cadence to it that is fun to read, and the colorful, fanciful illustrations will catch your eye. I've read this book several times already, and I'm an adult! Overall, I'd highly recommend this book.
The text encourages readers that God made us the way that we are and that He delights when we explore and use our unique talents. We're also encouraged to have faith, hope, love, and be kind.
I'll mention that the text says "God pictured your nose and all ten of your toes. / The sound of your voice? God had it composed." Some children do not have ten toes, so it's too bad it didn't just say "all of your toes." Also, there are a couple of words like "debut" and "revue" that may need to be explained the first time through.
The illustrations are very colorful and full of life and detail. You can spend some time looking at everything, making it more interesting to read again and again. After the text says "when you make-believe, the stories conceived," the illustrations went in a fanciful, imaginative direction that didn't necessarily match the text. It's clear by the end that what happened is make-believe, but it's a little surprising the first time through.
