Bright, Colorful and Diverse: A Book That Shows The Value of Our Uniqueness
    November 6, 2017
    Quality: 5
    Value: 5
    Meets Expectations: 5
The first thing that caught my attention on this book was the colorful cover. Bright greens, pinks, yellows, and oranges flow throughout, like paint on a canvas. Keep in mind the hardcover book is a picture book but not a board book. I love reviewing children's books because it allows me the opportunity to share with my kids and with my Sunday school kids. The group loves to read the book together.

This book by Turner would make a great gift for a young child or early reader. For those often looking for diversity in their books, look no further. There's a variety of different people in this book to show just how special and unique we all are. I think this is a fun, bright and colorful book sure to capture the eye of any child. Some of the paintings, both on the inner cover and within the book are random enough with shapes that could be made into a fun game. Like cloud watching, I'd take the opportunity to point out what might look like a fish, flower or a dragon. Or let them picture something that catches their eye. This is a sweet book that affirms that we are all God's children, lovingly created in His image, yet unique in looks and talents.

On days where my child might be upset because she's not as good at sports as the other kids, I want to help her celebrate the differences: the areas she does excel in. If we were all the same, it would be so boring. How cool is it that we are unique, bringing to the table a variety of skills, both creative and logical? I may not be good at decorating, but I can often fix something. So as sad as I may feel when I see all that other Pinterest Moms accomplish, I need to remind myself that my area I excel in is problem-solving. Not exciting, but still valuable! Perhaps this book is good for adults, like me, who also need the affirmation that we are God's children, creating lovingly by Him? I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I'm many years past my childhood, but children's books still remain my favorite read. "When God Made You" is colorful, both in wording and art. The pages catch your attention, and the gentle rhyme of the story takes you on a wonderful journey. Perfect for any child (or grown up who will never grow up). We're never too old to hear that God made us special.

I enjoy checking out all kinds of children's books - and there are so many out there! I was happy to have the chance to read and review When God Made You.

    The story:

This book shares a poem of sorts that talks about how much God cares about the child who is reading the book. It talks about how God planned out that child and their life before they were born.

    The illustrations:

I am not a big fan of the illustrations in this book. They are a little "out there" on some of the pages and just not cute.

    Who the book is for:

The back of the book says that it is for those aged 3 through 8, but I think that younger children might enjoy it, too. There are also parts - and words - that no one under 8 is going to fully understand.

    What I liked:

This book has a very positive message in regard to the child and their life. A message of God's love and his plan for them.

    What I didnt like:

I am not a fan of the illustrations.

I think that the book could have been written a bit simpler for young children to understand it.

    My conclusion:

    This is an okay book.

I give When God Made You 4 out of 5 stars.

An awesome author and awesome illustrator team!

Initially I was attracted to this book because of the illustrator David Catrow. This book is filled with clever and heart warming drawings. But I also discovered an awesome author Matthew Paul Turner who has a true gift with words. His poetry is like music. It flows beautifully from page to page and the illustrations enhance his words. This book is equally pleasing to the child and adult who shares the book with the little one.The emphasis over and over on the unique blessing each individual is to the world, to their family and to God makes this an important message all children should hear. I really liked how the author emphasized how God made the child and planned for good things and sees good things in the child. This is a precious book filled with love and sweet affirmations.

    You are created uniquely.

There is no one else like you.

You are always on God's mind.

These are all sentiments that Eric and I want to teach Sarabeth and help her to come to believe. We want her to see the beauty in each and every person created. To be able to see beyond what is and create something new and beautiful from it.

We got a chance to read When God Made You by Matthew Paul Turner, illustrated by David Catrow, with Sarabeth last week. New books are always exciting days in our house, but this was was a little more special. Sarabeth was engaging with the photos. She was excited to turn the page, and we heard quite a few exclamations as the bright colors captured her imagination.

When God Made You was written to help children about what makes every one unique. To discover character traits, talents, and personalities. It helps them learn that they have a special place in the world that only they can step into. It reminds children that God made them with a purpose in mind. With a plan in mind, God gave each child the likes and dislikes, skills and abilities that they need to carry out his dream for them.

Even though the target age for this book is children 3-8 years old, Sarabeth was able to follow along with the story as I read it. The pictures engaged her in a big way.

One note I've seen in several reviews is that some of the words are too big for toddlers to understand (Revue, debut). SB wasn't distracted by these words. But I do think they will give us chances to talk about what they mean as she gets older and better engages in language. I see them as opportunities for learning rather than distractions from the message.

I received a copy of this book from Blogging For Books. This review is my own, honest opinion.
