Publisher's Description

YOU, you… God thinks about you.
God was thinking of you long before your debut.

From early on, children are looking to discover their place in the world and longing to understand how their personalities, traits, and talents fit in. The assurance that they are deeply loved and a unique creation in our big universe is certain to help them spread their wings and fly.

Through playful, charming rhyme and vivid, fantastical illustrations, When God Made You inspires young readers to learn about their own special gifts and how they fit into God’s divine plan as they grow, explore, and begin to create for themselves.

’Cause when God made YOU, somehow God knew
That the world needed someone exactly like you!

When God Made You is a children's book (ages 3-8, according to the back cover) written by Matthew Paul Turner and illustrated by David Catrow. Through colorful and creative pictures paired with extravagant rhyming verse, When God Made You tells children that not only are they created exactly how God wanted them to be, but they also have a life set out before them to fulfill His destiny for that creation.

When God Made You reminds children that God knew them before they were even born and that God gave them the gifts, talents, and dreams that they'll hold so dear in this life.

While I enjoyed the colorful art portrayed in this story, the rhyme felt somewhat drawn out and left me unsure of an ideal audience for this book. There are a lot of big - and seldom used - words and expressions that might be challenging for younger readers to understand, while the repetition of some phrases may make I somewhat monotonous for older readers. The overall length might also take too long to hold the attention of younger readers.

I'm giving this book 3/5 stars. I'd recommend this book to kids that mostly focus on the pictures, younger audiences that enjoy reading just a couple random pages at a time, or older audiences that like larger concepts but still enjoy picture books.

"God pictured your nose and all ten of your toes. The sound of your voice? God had it composed."

    How beautiful is that?

With its outstanding artistic illustrations and poetic cadence, this lovely children's book is a reminder to young and old alike, that "God's family without you would not be the same".

    Enjoy every page.

The first thing that caught my attention on this book was the colorful cover. Bright greens, pinks, yellows, and oranges flow throughout, like paint on a canvas. Keep in mind the hardcover book is a picture book but not a board book. I love reviewing children's books because it allows me the opportunity to share with my kids and with my Sunday school kids. The group loves to read the book together.

This book by Turner would make a great gift for a young child or early reader. For those often looking for diversity in their books, look no further. There's a variety of different people in this book to show just how special and unique we all are. I think this is a fun, bright and colorful book sure to capture the eye of any child. Some of the paintings, both on the inner cover and within the book are random enough with shapes that could be made into a fun game. Like cloud watching, I'd take the opportunity to point out what might look like a fish, flower or a dragon. Or let them picture something that catches their eye. This is a sweet book that affirms that we are all God's children, lovingly created in His image, yet unique in looks and talents.

On days where my child might be upset because she's not as good at sports as the other kids, I want to help her celebrate the differences: the areas she does excel in. If we were all the same, it would be so boring. How cool is it that we are unique, bringing to the table a variety of skills, both creative and logical? I may not be good at decorating, but I can often fix something. So as sad as I may feel when I see all that other Pinterest Moms accomplish, I need to remind myself that my area I excel in is problem-solving. Not exciting, but still valuable! Perhaps this book is good for adults, like me, who also need the affirmation that we are God's children, creating lovingly by Him? I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I'm many years past my childhood, but children's books still remain my favorite read. "When God Made You" is colorful, both in wording and art. The pages catch your attention, and the gentle rhyme of the story takes you on a wonderful journey. Perfect for any child (or grown up who will never grow up). We're never too old to hear that God made us special.

I enjoy checking out all kinds of children's books - and there are so many out there! I was happy to have the chance to read and review When God Made You.

    The story:

This book shares a poem of sorts that talks about how much God cares about the child who is reading the book. It talks about how God planned out that child and their life before they were born.

    The illustrations:

I am not a big fan of the illustrations in this book. They are a little "out there" on some of the pages and just not cute.

    Who the book is for:

The back of the book says that it is for those aged 3 through 8, but I think that younger children might enjoy it, too. There are also parts - and words - that no one under 8 is going to fully understand.

    What I liked:

This book has a very positive message in regard to the child and their life. A message of God's love and his plan for them.

    What I didnt like:

I am not a fan of the illustrations.

I think that the book could have been written a bit simpler for young children to understand it.

    My conclusion:

    This is an okay book.

I give When God Made You 4 out of 5 stars.
