When Death Draws Near #3, in the Gwen Marcey series, by Carrie Stuart Parks
When Gwen Marcey finds herself out of work, jobs soon appear. But even for a forensic artist, these cases seem strange. The first involves a death-by-snakebite; the second, a serial rapist. Gwen suspects the cases may even be connected. If that isn’t enough, her doctor’s office calls to inform her that her breast cancer seems to have returned. Then her daughter suddenly shows up. Time may be running out in more ways than one for Gwen Marcey when death draws near.

One that is scary and stress filled. I enjoyed the ride though, and would recommend it highly to anyone that enjoys a good suspense book that is clean and a fun read...long as you don't read it before bed!
christiangirl4evr4 Stars Out Of 5When Death Draws NearSeptember 30, 2016christiangirl4evrQuality: 4Value: 5Meets Expectations: 3I became a big fan of Carrie Stuart Parks character, Gwen Marcey. I love the character of Gwen Marcey. She's strong, independent, intelligent, has all the problems that we ourselves find ourselves in including being a cancer survivor, mother of a teen, and divorcee, and yes, finds herself knee deep in problems. My problem with this book is that after everything she has been through, you just don't make the dumb choices she made in the first half of the book, especially putting her daughter in possible danger. I don't care that money was involved and her cancer possibly coming back, a mom just doesn't do that. As good of a writer as Carrie Stuart Parks is, she could have come up with a better way for Gwen to get involved in the mystery of the book. With that said, the 2nd half of the book WAY made up for the first half with it's suspense, twists, turns, and fast paced story line. I'm usually pretty good at determining "who done it" but I didn't get this one right. Would I recommend it to a friend? Yes, but with the caution that they have to hang in till halfway through and just take the dumb choices with a grain of salt....

The story is set in Pikeville, Kentucky, in the Appalachian Mountains.
Gwen Marcey arrives in Pikeville, Kentucky, to draw the face of an unrecognizable man found dead and to draw a serial rapist still at large. The first drawing leads to an identification, but the rape victim disappears before Gwen can complete the drawing. When she discovers many accidental deaths occurring around town, Gwen suspects a connection. Without the sheriffs support, however, and with her teenage daughter joining her, she accepts a job investigating a snake-handling church suspected of illegal activity. Desperately in need of the reward it would bring, Gwen sets out to draw the faces of the criminals. But when she finds a connection between all of the cases, her life and that of her daughter may be in grave danger.
I enjoyed this novel. Having lived near Pikeville, Kentucky for a short time, I found the descriptions fairly accurate. While there were no characters that stood out as particularly lovable, all of them worked together well to complete the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian suspense novels.
I received this book free from the publisher and was not required to write a positive review.
JanetBelton, TXAge: 45-54Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5Intense and SuspensefulSeptember 6, 2016JanetBelton, TXAge: 45-54Gender: FemaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Carrie Stuart Parks' Gwen Marcey novels are intense and full of suspense. The forensic artist for whom the books are named always finds herself fighting for the lives of potential victims which include her own and her daughters. When Death Draws Near, the third in this series, was no exception. I had a hard time taking a break from reading this book for doing other things.
This time, Gwen Marcey is helping to solve two mysteries. Her primary reason for accepting work in Pikeville, KY (besides her need for funds) is to help the sheriff's department find a serial rapist. The victims, once rescued, keep leaving town with their families without a trace. Gwen soon learns, though, of a series of unusual accidental deaths happening around the town. She suspects there is a connection between the two mysteries.
My favorite part of this book was the personal lesson Gwen learned at the end of the book. Parks touched on the message so gently throughout this powerful story, then drove the point home beautifully. Readers who enjoy inspirational criminal investigation stories will like this series of books. I thank Thomas Nelson Publishers for sending me a complimentary copy in exchange for this honest review.

If it has interesting characters, a great career, and a plot that keeps me reading, I'm hooked! That's exactly what happened with When Death Draws Near. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the Gwen Marcey series, and this one takes it one step further. Her personal life continues to be out of control with the tension of providing for her daughter and keeping her safe when Gwen gets plunged into a new murder. This one dives deep into the wilds of Kentucky where people are dying from what appears to be snake handling. Is there more to it? And what can she do to track down the culprits while fighting back against her nemesis: breast cancer?
There are political layers. Spiritual layers. Crime. Tension. Suspense.
A race from the first chapter to the end, this book will delight suspense lovers of all types.
