Product Description

The aging of loved ones is a difficult transition that nearly all children must face. But when aging includes and illness like Alzheimer's, the challenge to a family is profound. In this poignant book, through the story of young Kat, Maria Shriver lends her honest, deeply person insight and reassuring voice to a topic affecting millions of Americans. She presents a truly touching story that inspires, guides and educates--and encourages readers to open their eyes to the beauty and love that our elderly loved ones have to offer.

Grandpa has always been the best storyteller Kate has ever known, but lately, he seems different. He repeats himself, becomes easily frustrated, and then one day, he even forgets Kate's name. When her mother explains Grandpa's disease, Kate is overwhelmed. What will happen to hem? How do her mom and Grandma feel about it? Will others in her family get sick too? How will she explain it to her friends and younger siblings? With remarkable strength and creativity, Kat not only explores the questions, but also resolves to cherish her grandpa's life and memories. In doing so, she forges a bond between them that will remain forever in their hearts. Recommended for children of all ages.

Kate has always adored her grandpa's storytelling, but lately he's been repeating the same stories again and again. One day, he even forgets Kate's name. Her mother's patient explanations open Kate's eyes to what so many of the elderly must confront: Alzheimer's disease and other forms of memory loss. Determined to support her grandfather, Kate explores ways to help him--and herself--cope by creating a photo album of their times together, memories that will remain in their hearts forever.

I am a grandfather. My wife has Alzheimers disease. I can only wish I had read Maia Shrivers book Whats Happening to Grandpa? when it was first published in 2004. I watched as our children and grandchildren struggled through questions I hadnt resolved myself.

Shrivers insights into the mind of a child and understanding of the process of aging, dementia, and Alzheimers capture the emotions of the victim of Alzheimers, their primary caregiver, and the entire family impacted by the disease.

I was deeply moved by Shrivers warmth and sensitivity. The unique use of the voice and viewpoint of Kate, a child, make this a valuable educational resource for children, K 5th grade. The book can also serve to open conversations with older children.

The obvious love and patience Kate develops with her grandfather as she works through her feelings of hurt, sadness, and loss bear evidence of understanding as she takes on the project of savoring and saving Grandpas stories by making a photo album to insure that these stories live on as Grandpas memory continues to decline.

Sandra Speidels soft colored illustrations add a rich sense that creates the same warm feelings through Shrivers word pictures and give an extra dimension of reality to the story.

Whats Happening to Grandpa? is a wonderful tool for Alzheimers awareness, family comfort, and childhood education. Highly recommended.
