Fitzysmom5 Stars Out Of 5April 18, 2014FitzysmomAll you boy mommas need to grab a Kleenex before reading this one! It is such a poignant reminder that the days may be long but the years fly by. Before you know it you will be looking into the face of your precious grandbaby.
Through the use of rhyming verse Karen Kingsbury takes us through the journey of a mother and her beloved son. As each milestone passes the momma is there to cheer her son on no matter what he grows up to be. The story begins with the birth of her own son and goes through all the life stages up to the point of the birth of her grandson. The illustrations by Valeria Docampo are absolutely beautiful. I love the bright colors and the whimsical paintings.
While this is technically a children's book I think it would make a marvelous gift for Mother's Day for all the boy mommas and even the grandmommas!

As touching as those precious moments are with your sweet baby boy, so are the poignant poetry contained in Karen Kingsbury's latest, Whatever You Grow Up To Be. As a mom of three boys, I know how exhausting, chaotic, and downright smelly life with them can be. But I also know about and store deep in my heart those times that they are running at you with a slimy frog because they just want to show you what they were lucky enough to find in the grass as they ran out to play. Or maybe when that sweaty little boy comes running in the house with a handful of wildflowers freshly picked for his favorite person in the whole world, "you". He says, "Momma, I have a 'prize' for you!". Standing there holding his flowers out to you with clumps of soil still attached.
Whatever You Grow Up To Be, speaks about the love that a mother has for her son. It shows us that while its sad that they must grow up and leave us one day. We will trust God and accept the path He has chosen for them.

The poetry begins with the mother's joy from the moment her son is born, and proceeds through the milestones of her son's life, and her love and support at every stage. As she tells him about those milestones she encourages and cheers her son forward, and shows acceptance for whatever her son decides to be, explaining that God has plans for him. Each segment throughout the book contains a well-chosen scriptural reading appropriate to the sentiments involved, enhancing the spiritual aspects of this wonderful book.
The is an over-sized hardcover book that is beautifully written and illustrated! Not only that, it is spiritually enriching and encouraging. Although poignant, as time passes by so swiftly through "the son's" life, the reading is positive and superbly written. As I read through this book I felt strong emotions at every stage of the boy's life, and the support and encouragement that is revealed as "the mother" talks to her child. I will be giving this book to my daughter who is expecting twin boys in a couple of months. This is a book that should be in the libraries of all mothers of sons!

Whatever You Grow Up to Be Karen Kingsbury is a beautiful book of a Mother's bedtime rhyme to her son about all the possibilities that lie ahead in his life.
When my son asks me to read the book he describes it as, "can you read the story where the boy grows up and becomes a Dad?" It's sweet. The story actually begins with the child as a baby - so this book would be a cute 'baby shower' gift if your Mom-to-be knows she is having a boy.
The pictures from Valeria Docampo are very creative and eye catching and really help flesh the story out. Of course the story is told with a Christian over tone, so there are a few biblical ideas here that your son or daughter can glean. (of course the story is about a 'boy' if you want a girl focused book by the same author I recommend 'Always Daddy's Princess.')
This would make a great book to have in your church library, nursery or a gift to a grandson or granddaughter.
Thank you to Zondervan for giving me this preview copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.
