What HAVEN'T I loved from the pen of Vannetta Chapman? But it was a real treat to read this first book in her new Amish mystery series. Bishop Henry Lapp and his Amish community in Monte Vista, Colorado are homespun and easy to identify with. An arsonist has set his sights on these plain people, and Henry has to dust off an unwanted gift to help solve this who-dunit before more anyone else dies. In the midst of the tension and crimes, we see a tender relationship blossoming into courtship. I especially liked that this romantic thread didn't involve the typical young people, but folks in their 60's like me!

Chapman's descriptive prose is as natural as the organic vegetables from an Amish garden. Each scene, each conversation, is realistic and full of the momentum that carries you into the next chapter (and the one after that, and the one after that...). I found it really hard to put this book down. I could easily identify with her characters' hopes and fears, and really longed to see their world set right again. I also learned something from this book: I hadn't been aware of accidental savants. Absolutely fascinating! And for me it was so satisfying that Henry used his special gift to not only help solve the crime, but to minister healing to the criminal. Pick up your copy of What the Bishop Saw to see what I mean!

Vannetta Chapman's best book so far---each one far surpasses the last. The location is Colorado with a small group of Amish who are targeted by an arsonist. Questions arise as to whether the arsonist is Amish or English and what is the motive. Bishop Lapp has a gift resulting from a long-ago accident which the is utilized by the police. Caution--you'll fall in love with the Bishop and all the characters. I wish all Amish bishops had Bishop Lapp's' love of his people and spiritual discernment. You never will go wrong reading Vannetta Chapman's books. I'm looking forward to reading the next in this trilogy.

Henry Lapp had a gift, or was it a curse? Hed suffered a brain injury as a child and spent weeks in a medically induced coma. The gift seemed to be a result of his injury. He and his family discovered it a few days after his return from the hospital.

Henry was pestering his mother to let him go outside and play with his siblings. Of course, he couldnt. She suggested he draw a picture for his grandmother.

He drew a picture of the church picnic they had had. His parents couldnt believe what they were seeing when they looked at the picture he had drawn. Henry didnt draw again. That is, until he was much older and was asked to draw a picture to help solve crimes going on in his church district. Even then he hesitated.

This book will grab your attention from the start. What in the world did young Henry draw in that picture of the picnic? Why did he stop drawing? What is Henrys gift?

Pick up a copy of this well-written book and read Henrys story. Youll be glad you did!

Cold Shot is the first book in the Chesapeake Valor Series.

Former Swat sniper, Griffin McCray now lives a quiet solitary life as a park ranger, but the discovery of a skeleton a national park forces him to call in forensic anthropologist Finley Scott. As she works, she finds that this is a modern skeleton, and she is making someone so nervous that she is now receiving death threats.

Griffin's past as a sniper and how that was worked into the story was was fascinating. I was quite intrigued with his character struggling to put his past behind him and yet using that past to save Finley's life. I loved watching how his faith as a Christian grew throughout the book and the path that he found himself walking was not perfect but it was right thing to do.

Griffin and Finley made a great couple, very believable. They had a great dynamic and I enjoyed reading their story.

The book also introduces us to Griffin's college Buddy's Parker and Declean, who both play pivotal parts in the story. The biggest problem I had was that there were just too many people and to many sub-plots going on. It took me half the book to get it all sorted out. Then again maybe this was just me having trouble. However that being said I thought the overall storyline was well-thought-out and well written. All the characters were very realistic with their personality traits and quirks, and they all had great depth to them. There was humor as well as drama which made for a well rounded story and I would definitely recommend this book.
