Depending on your religious or denominational affiliation, the Lords Supper is also referred to as Communion or Eucharist. Many churches partake in the practice of the Lords Supper but few congregations have a solid understanding of its purpose.

Sproul speaks to what the Bible teaches regarding the Lords Supper, its history, its presence in todays culture, and its hope for the future. There are several OT and NT scriptural accounts that he utilizes to support explanation of Communion. Essentially, the purpose of drinking the wine and eating the bread is to assist in our remembrance of Christs death, burial, resurrection, and future coming by worshipping Him in spirit and truth.

Looking at the Passover as seen in Exodus, the last Supper of Christ in the Gospels, and the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, Sproul details the history and theology of the Last Supper. He also touches on the many perspectives held by different denominations in regards to its importance to Jesus and our present lives.

I found it a relief that he addressed the importance to allowing only those who are confessed Jesus as Christ, Lord and Savior to partake in Communion. At our current church, the pastor subtly, but firmly, requests at every communion that those who have not received Christ as their Savior pass the plate. Sproul does a great job of explaining why this is so vital to purpose of the Last Supper.

You can see in a couple chapters that Sproul distinctly resides on the side of Reformed theology in regards to the subject. He also did not address common concerns that arise from the Last Supper: frequency and replacement of the wine.
