Author Mark Dever seeks to help believers recognize the key characteristics of a healthy church: expositional preaching, biblical theology, and a right understanding of the gospel. Dever then calls us to develop those characteristics in our own churches. By following the example of New Testament authors and addressing church members from pastors to pew sitters, Dever challenges all believers to do their part in maintaining the local church. What Is a Healthy Church? offers timeless truths and practical principles to help each of us fulfill our God-given roles in the body of Christ.

Together these volumes provide a wonderful resource for the pastor who knows that his church needs a return to the biblical pattern but needs help in getting there. "What Is a Healthy Church?" is something of a "Cliff's Notes" version of Dever's larger volume, "9 Marks of a Healthy Church." The pastor who finds agreement with Dever in this smaller book will want to pursue his larger volume , as well. Each of the books in this series should come with a "WARNING" label because the authors rip off the scabs of cultural tradition that have virtually robbed the Church of its effectiveness in being the visible representation of its Lord. Most pastors should expect to be challenged if he attempts to implement the "9 Marks" too quickly. But if you are ready to trust God and have your ecclesiastical world rocked, then start here. This isn't a comprehensive work, but it is sufficient to whet the appetite of the church leader who is not afraid to sacrifice his or his church's "sacred cows" and reinstate the Bible to its rightful place of authority.

I read the book and was not dissapointed that I did. Every chapter was informative, inspiring and led to many affirmations of concerns I already had for my congregration and myself. This resource not only aided me in identifying issues and infirmities within myself and members, but laid out discussion questions for reflection to point us in the direction we need to move toward to glorify God.

Gene Payne5 Stars Out Of 5February 25, 2009Gene PayneAn excellent (book) because many church members do not actually (know) what the church, as a whole, is seeking to do in having their regular services. Frankly, my goal is to build the church up with the Word of GOD and trust this will lead them to active service for the LORD.
