Publisher's Description

When Amy Somers loses her job as a lobbyist, she moves to Misty Willow, well aware that she's crossing bridges she'd burned years before. With all the mistakes she's made and the uncaring things she's done--even to her own family--she can hardly believe that happiness will find her, especially when Gabe Kendall, her first crush and her first kiss, rides back into her life atop a buckskin mare.

A former Marine, Gabe is at loose ends after serving a prison sentence for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He sees beyond Amy's hard exterior to the girl he once knew and loved, and he longs to see her open her heart. Yet with his vision clouded by shame for his past and fears about the future, he finds it difficult to see the path ahead.

But the memory of that long-ago kiss just may have the power to reignite a romance that brings out the best in both of them.

Johnnie Alexander's third book in her Misty Willow series, What Hope Remembers, is a wonderful story full of interpersonal conflict, tension, and hard fought resolution. However, I do recommend reading the previous books before delving into this one. Unfortunately I did not go this route, and struggled to catch all the nuances of the story, which most likely would have deepened the story's message.

In spite of this, I did enjoy the tale Alexander wove together. The main characters held very real challenges I could identify with and were set amid a plot that kept me entertained until the end. I enjoyed the interplay between the cast as well as the tension Alexander created within her storyline. The theme of reconciliation and new beginnings was also refreshing. Now I just need to go back and read the first two books to fill in some holes

Overall this was an enjoyable read that will be sure to entertain and encourage readers.

What Hope Remembers is a fantastic book. Amy is a nob, she walks all over people, she can be verbally abusive. She leaves that life - the only life she's known - and goes to Misty Willow - back home - why? Well because - nah - you have to read the book ...but it is an incredibly good reason. While there she sees Gabe, an old beau. He is also hurting from things in his past. Is there things in his past? Is there any electricity between them or is it just spaghetti rope? Do they deal with the pain from their pasts or do they keep it inside like they always do? Do they see each other can she heal or will she stay the same awful self? I received a copy of this book from Revell. All the opinions of this book are my own.

    SUMMARY:

Returning home to her childhood community after a heartbreaking situation, Amy Somers isn't exactly proud of the person she has recently become. Not having stayed especially close to her family, Amy can only wonder how she will be accepted back. When her high-school sweetheart, Gabe Kendall, rides into town, memories surround her even as she realizes Gabe may have some history due to personal choices as well. Romance, forgiveness, family and sweetness combine with a dash of country charm in the newest Misty Willow series novel by author Johnnie Alexander.

    A PENNY FOR MY THOUGHTS:

Having read one of the previous books in this series, I had hoped to revisit some of the characters yet again. Though this novel works as a stand-alone, it works even better when read with the series. A strong contemporary writer with just enough pizazz in her storyline to make it enjoyable, What Hopes Remembers is full of gentleness, understanding, love and surprises. Taking place on the ranch of Whisper Lane Stables is an added delight for horse lovers. Wonderful addition to a well-written series.

I loved Johnnie Alexander's explanation she wrote at the end of the book for why she chose to write this particular one. She shares with her readers how she had no intention of telling Amy's story, but people were asking for it. Being a great author, she chose to listen to them and this story was birthed. I love it! I love that she listened and was willing to give it a chance. This is the third book in the Misty Willow series, but you don't have to read the others in order to know what's going on in the story. It could easily stand alone if needed.

I remember when Amy was introduced and she was a character that rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning. She was mean and frustrating and I honestly couldn't wait for her to stop being in the story! And here I am reading an entire book about her! You'll be glad to know that I disliked Amy as much at the beginning of this book as I had previously. She was protecting herself emotionally while being mean and rude to others. While it is a form of self-protection, it got old fast.

Thankfully the story has a man, Gabe, who suffered from the past that he wishes he could erase. He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, but that didn't matter. He now has to live with the stigma that goes with it. He is the redeeming factor in the first part of the story. He's not bitter about everything but looks outside of himself. He still has his own flaws, but he is still nice to people, unlike Amy.

By the middle of the story, Amy began to grow on me and I eventually did come around to like her, understand her, and appreciate her story. I'm so glad that Johnnie Alexander chose to write this book. Without it, we would forever remember Amy as the mean, bitter woman. Now she has redeemed herself in our sight.
