Avid reader Barb5 Stars Out Of 5Amazing Historically rich novelOctober 18, 2019Avid reader BarbJocelyn Green is an artist she paints history with lyrical words in settings so real you might cringe or cry as you read. I love history and this book is filled with historical nuggets that were fascinating. Jocelyn included a romance and intrigue that kept me listening on and on. It was a very satisfying book in many ways. Truth, with all the very agonizing realities of war, immigration, poverty and human nature were vividly portrayed. This was not a fluffy read, it was totally satisfying, so vividly written it was like watching a movie. I had read this book when it first came out, hearing it now was a story come to life. This book was offered by the author with no requirement of a review. It was a pleasure to do so.
Liz RHartselle, AlAge: 25-34Gender: Female5 Stars Out Of 5ExceptionalOctober 10, 2019Liz RHartselle, AlAge: 25-34Gender: FemaleThis is my second time reading this book and it was even better than I remembered. I listened to the audiobook this time and Laura E. Richcreek did such a phenomenal job. She really brought this story to life and I wanted to keep listening even after the book was finished. I can't wait to hear to the last two books in the series!
Green's attention to detail was stellar, while in no way drying out the story. Rather, all the details about the Sanitary Commission and the nurses of the Civil War really made the story pop. These nurses were the mothers of what is one of the largest, female dominated professions in the United State and to read about the resistance and hostility they faced was fascinating. Charlotte's journey as a nurse, as well as her personal growth along the way, made her such a compelling heroine to follow. She knew the path she wanted to take and followed it. The subtle romance thread was perfect for this story. You know it's there, but it didn't overshadow the main plot.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first two entries in the Heroines Behind the Lines series and am looking forward to the last two books. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys Civil War fiction, whether you read or listen to the book. If you are interested in the history of nursing or the modern-day Red Cross, both very interesting subjects and excellently detailed, do yourself a favor and read Wedded to War.
I was given a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Irishniff5 Stars Out Of 5Wanted to listen more....September 26, 2019IrishniffQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I actually found myself looking for more household chores to do so that I could listen to this audiobook longer. I thoroughly enjoyed Wedded to War. The narrator, Laura E. Richcreek, had such a pleasant voice and did a great job with distinct character voices. It seemed as if she was truly engaged in the story as she narrated. And why not? This well researched Civil War fiction was engrossing. The struggles and hardships were realistic and although disheartening at times, perseverance prevailed. The touch of romance helped the balance and was nicely added. Lessons in grace, wisdom and doing the right thing abound. I liked that Jocelyn Green weaved Scripture into the novel at just the right time to support the themes. I was given a copy of this audiobook by the author. All opinions are mine.
cameracourt5 Stars Out Of 5A riveting story of the Civil War!September 15, 2019cameracourtQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Wedded to War is a fascinating, layered, and quite serious look at the front lines of women's foray into nursing during the beginning of the Civil War. Jocelyn Green has written an epic story that encompasses many true-life historical figures and accurate events that serve as characters in themselves as heroines Charlotte Waverly, Ruby O'Flannery, and others work as part of the Sanitary Commission to aid, nurse, and manage the ghastly aftermath of war in their very own country. As Charlotte finds her purpose in showing compassion and grace to everyone around her, she also matures over the timeline of the story into a capable woman of character. The hint of a romance between Charlotte and the hero was happily fitting and complimentary to her role, and I was delighted to learn that the couple is based on a real historical couple! Ruby, too, is a compelling heroine. I wondered, at times, how the twisting and sad threads of her story were going to work into the whole, but like the theme of the novel, all of it works toward the surprising good and satisfying end to the story.
The audio presentation of this novel, in particular, is well-told and riveting.
THANK YOU to the author for the audiobook version of this novel for the purpose of a review. This is my honest review.
artbug19975 Stars Out Of 5EXCEPTIONAL HISTORYSeptember 3, 2019artbug1997Jocelyn's expertise of military knowledge and hours of research are incredibly evident in this historical series. The Civil War history you learn in school doesn't hold a candle to the detail you get in every one of these novels. Her fictional characters molded after real-life heroes take you quite literally behind the lines; offering an extremely personal look into the lives of those individuals who experienced the war for the true horror that it was. You'll feel as though you haven't truly learned about the war until you've read these books...
With heart-wrenching facts, intimate detail, and a sweet touch of fictional romance that no doubt blossomed in truth for some, these novels will truly leave you in awe of the grit our ancestors were made of, and the incredible gift Green possesses in telling their stories.
