In Victory Over the Darkness, Dr. Neil Anderson presents an argument for the resolution of internal and mental conflict through spiritual breakthrough by focusing on identity in Christ. While the book contains some helpful guidance, thought-provoking challenges, and quotes a lot of Scripture, sections of the book are also complicated and repetitive, and even questionable at times.

Certainly, prayer and study of Biblical truth are crucial to any difficult parts of life. This is correct in Victory Over the Darkness. However, his writings and examples frequently portray the medical field in a negative light and lead readers to believe that mental illness is mostly a spiritual issue. (A brief sentence about two thirds into the book acknowledges that depression can have biochemical causes.) In many ways this failure to acknowledge the multifaceted causes of and factors to mental illness adds to the existing stigma surrounding mental illness. This could have detrimental effects for readers who experience either temporary or chronic mental illness due to physiological components, but are led to believe that their condition is purely spiritual.

Overall, while some of the practices in Victory Over the Darkness may be helpful, readers would be wise to read this book with caution or read this book alongside other wholistic, biblically-based Christian resources regarding mental illness.

Having sold over 2 million copies since its original publishing in 1990, Victory Over The Darkness has been rereleased in a revised and updated edition. In this book, Dr Neil T Anderson teaches on spiritual warfare, identity in Christ, inner healing, and discipleship, all of which are closely intertwined. He teaches on these subjects throughout twelve chapters like: Who Are You?, Healing Emotional Wounds, The Whole Gospel, and Winning The Battle For Your Mind. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent book! I thoroughly enjoyed this read because I could identify with many areas discussed here. In this popular classic, Neil Anderson touches upon several reasons/ways we allow chains/strongholds in our lives. He discusses how we can break free from those holds and where we can find that freedom (ultimately in Jesus Christ of course). As the subtitle suggests, learning and realizing who we are Christ is the solution to many of our self-identity issues.

Do you feel inadequate? Do you find yourself constantly comparing to others or seeking validation in others or things? Are just some areas discussed in this book. All these struggles are very relevant today as they have always been in fact.

Now, normally, I would not read this type of book mostly because they tend to be cheesy, lame, and appealing to the feelings and emotions too much. I usually steer clear away from books that discuss feelings and emotions. But this book hit the nail on the head on many areas and I actually went away with small nuggets of truth I will definitely share with others.

I'm taking away 1 star for the small font and the author's tone in some places, in which he sounded like he was oversimplifying some issues that may not be very simple for some.
