Publisher's Description

For American Claire Stewart, joining the French Resistance sounded as romantic as the storylines she hopes will one day grace the novels she wants to write. But when she finds herself stranded on English shores, with five French Jewish children she smuggled across the channel before Nazis stormed Paris, reality feels more akin to fear.

With nowhere to go, Claire throws herself on the mercy of an estranged aunt, begging Lady Miranda Langford to take the children into her magnificent estate. Heavily weighted with grief of her own, Miranda reluctantly agrees . . . if Claire will stay to help. Though desperate to return to France and the man she loves, Claire has few options. But her tumultuous upbringing—spent in the refuge of novels with fictional friends—has ill-prepared her for the daily dramas of raising children, or for the way David Campbell, a fellow American boarder, challenges her notions of love. Nor could she foresee how the tentacles of war will invade their quiet haven, threatening all who have come to call Bluebell Wood home and risking the only family she’s ever known.

Set in England’s lush and storied Lake District in the early days of World War II, and featuring cameos from beloved literary icons Beatrix Potter and C. S. Lewis, Until We Find Home is an unforgettable portrait of life on the British home front, challenging us to remember that bravery and family come in many forms.

Editorial Reviews

Starred Review. Based on the author’s own interviews with Holocaust survivors and the gentiles who risked their own lives to rescue them, Christy Award winner Gohlke’s (Secrets She Kept) powerful historical novel features a suspenseful and heart-wrenching plot and unforgettable characters.

Until We Find Home was a story that quietly took me by surprise. The first few pages started out quite fast and intense, and then life slowed down for our characters and I must admit I felt antsy to move on in the story. I also did not care for the main character of Claire at first either. I felt she was clueless and selfish and a bit cruel in some of her dealings with the children. However, as I continued reading and let the story take me through its pages and I let me expectations go, I was quite astonished at how it seems that even I grew a bit with the characters as their story unfolded.

This is a story of family. Of opening your heart to those blessings that God has placed in your life. It may not be how you thought they would be like, but they are blessings just the same. This story also deals with letting go of our past hurts and even our dreams so that new and better dreams can take their places.

This story takes place during the years of World War 2 and deals with the refugee children that were sent away from their parents and homes for their own safety, especially Jewish children from other countries. We have British, American, Scottish, French, and German all trying to get along and eventually becoming a true bona fide family. All the characters grew on me and I enjoyed watching their journey from strangers to family. I also really liked all the literary works and their authors that were mentioned throughout. This was a thought-provoking and heartwarming tale.

Sometimes we dream of things we believe we cannot live without. We think we know ourselves. Then reality hits, and we find everything is upside down. Thats what happens to young, ambitious Claire who fancies herself a writer helping with the French Resistance in the early stages of World War II. Claire is in love with a man who is deep in the Resistance, and is helping him save Jewish children by smuggling them out of France. Unfortunately, her love does not meet her at the agreed upon time, and Claire is forced to take responsibility for getting the latest group of children to safety. She rebelliously resists going any further than she feels is necessary she has done her duty. But her plans fall apart. She expects others to take responsibilities they have never agreed upon, while refusing to do the same herself. Being forced to care for other peoples needs also allows Claire and her Aunt Miranda to grow, and their hearts begin to heal.

This is an interesting book, set during the early stages of World War II in England. Ms. Gohlke does an excellent job of making you feel a part of the lives of the characters. At times I wanted to yell at Claire and point out her faults, and also to do the same with Aunt Miranda. The kids in the story grow and change as well, and their antics are entirely believable. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about life in England during World War II, or who just wants to read a great romance.

I won a copy of this book from Goodreads giveaways and was not required to give a favorable review. This was a great story about how each person needs to come into their own through belief, hard work and shear determination. This story starts with a young American woman in Paris working in a bookstore and helping get French Jewish Refugee children out of France before the Nazis occupy Paris. Claire and her 5 charges are brought to a boat to get the children across to England and the person who was suppose to do it doesn't show and she forced to go with them. She doesn't meet up with the person in England shores and has to figure out if the aunt she was known about but never met is still in England. She brings the children to her and ends up having to stay and take care of them and many other who have been misplaced from their new homes along the English shores, but these other children are German Jews. Such a combination. The fight these children had everyday to survive, an aunt to know a niece that looks like her & also her lost son. Bring the war to life on each of the lines written in this story.

American Claire Stewart smuggles five Jewish children out of France and to England and her aunt's estate. With the help of another American, David, Claire takes care of the children for the duration of the war. I found this book to be a decent read, and the cameo appearances of Beatrix Potter and C.S. Lewis were interesting.
