Jessica T.4 Stars Out Of 5Unscripted by Davis BunnJanuary 7, 2022Jessica T.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 4I read this story on recommendation from a couple of friends. The storyline is interesting. The main character, Danny Byrd, just wants to create good movies on budget and on time. His dream is to someday move into the producer roll so he has more control over the films he's working on. But his dream is thwarted by his friend and outsiders. People who have worked with him over the years rise up and bring Megan Pierce, a film industry lawyer, to his aid. Danny's and Megan's crossing paths stir up secrets. As they strive together to create a film and uncover the secrets, a special connection comes to the surface, but can they let go of hurts from the past in order for a possible almost-unhoped-for future? Well written. A little dry for me. I like moments where I can laugh during a story. But overall very good.
GrandaddyAAge: Over 65Gender: male5 Stars Out Of 5Dealing with AdversityDecember 14, 2019GrandaddyAAge: Over 65Gender: maleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Living and working in Hollywood has never been one of my dreams. Danny Byrd and his childhood friend had talked about it and planned for it from their early teen years. They wanted to produce movies. Megan Pierce had dreams as well, but her aspirations were to be a big-name lawyer. If I ever needed a lawyer, I would want one like Megan who was totally focused on doing what was right for her clients. Her strength of character and her drive made her a force to be reckoned with. The law firm where she got her start was an atrocious place to work, but she refused to let it whip her. She may not have recognized it, but seemingly the experience prepared her for the battles to come. Although her parents were not main characters, I appreciated the role they played, always supporting and praying for their daughter. The story begins with Danny in jail. I enjoyed seeing his character develop as he dealt with one adversity after the other. His true abilities seemed to shine the most when he was working with Emma, the teenage saxophone player. I could almost hear the saxophone each time the author portrayed her playing it. The story flowed smoothly with numerous surprises along the way. I enjoyed the book so much that I would welcome a sequel.
arkmom5 Stars Out Of 5RedemptionNovember 26, 2019arkmomQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Danny Bryd is a Hollywood producer who has an excellent reputation for getting things done and on budget. Things fall apart for him when his business partner steals the investors' money, and Danny finds himself in jail with both his career and reputation in shreds.
L.A. attorney, Megan is asked to be Danny's defender.
I learned quite a bit about the film making industry and found it quite fascinating, and at times cut throat. Everyone wants to get ahead.
Davis Bunn is one of my favorite Christian fiction authors and I enjoyed this story!
I was given an ecopy of this book from the publisher, Revell and Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Fhlady4 Stars Out Of 5Hollywood FilmmakingNovember 4, 2019FhladyQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This was definitely a new genre for me from one of my favorite authors. I have read many of Davis Bunn's Christian fiction series, but this book is definitely general market contemporary. It is a clean read, quick read which I definitely enjoyed.
Danny Byrd has grown up as a foster kid along with his best friend J.R. They have gone in to business together as an agency for producing Hollywood films. But Danny now finds himself in jail and J.R. has absconded with every bit of their assets and set Danny up to be the bad guy. Someone sends an attorney, Megan Pierce, to represent him; and he also discovers that he has inherited half ownership of a lodge in San Luis Obispo, California.
This was an interesting storyline as it takes you behind the scenes in film production and shows the dog eat dog attitude of those involved in it. There was also a hint of cozy mystery in determining who was helping pay for all the good things that were happening to Danny. A touch of romance between Danny and Megan was the icing on the cake. Realistic characters both main and secondary and a good plot made this a good read.
**I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone. I was not compensated for this review.
Jane4 Stars Out Of 5A story to savorOctober 30, 2019JaneQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Davis Bunn is one of those authors that I have been reading for years. Some of his books are historical some are contemporary, but all of them have one thing in common: they are to be savored. His new book, Unscripted is no exception.
Unscripted is the story of Danny Byrd, a wounded, broken and betrayed man who is learning to put the pieces of his life together again. The beauty of this story is in how that happens. As the title would lead you to believe, the story of Danny's life takes a path both unplanned and unexpected-unscripted.
From behind prison bars, Danny emerges, freed in part by one who helped put him there. He finds himself at the mercy of those who are truly merciful. He is confronted with the need to forgive, with the need to trust and also the need to become vulnerable. Bunn weaves these themes into a story that takes us through the production of a movie, from budget negotiations to finished product.
The setting was very interesting, I gained some insight into the world of film making that I hadn't had before. This is one of the things I appreciate about Bunn's writing, his ability to research and then translate that information into a story that immerses you into a believable place, teaching you along the way so that you feel like you belong right there with the characters.
I would recommend Unscripted to someone looking for a thoughtful read to savor. It is a perfect book to curl up with this fall while enjoying a hot drink and a rainy day.
