Publisher's Description

People have their limits. Some choose to ignore them.

God’s power and love have no limits. So why do Christians put limits on their relationship with Him? We could be pursuing greater knowledge, experiencing deeper intimacy, and abiding in freer joy… and yet we routinely settle for mediocrity in our spiritual lives.

But if you are ready to explode your self-imposed limits, Dr. Richard Blackaby can guide you through powerful and passionate insights revealed in this new book.

By contrasting mediocrity with the spirituality of the great “heroes of the faith,” Dr. Blackaby shows you that you need not settle for less than God intends for you. God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people like you…but only when you allow Him to enlarge your spiritual capacity and overcome your self-imposed limits.

“I hope this book inspires you to aim for a new level of walking with God. I want you to reach heights in your spiritual life that you never dreamed were possible, to experience God working through your life in a powerful new dimension, to hear words from God that will dramatically change your life and your world. I want to help you blow past any limitations you have set for yourself in your Christian life.” —Dr. Richard Blackaby

Author Bio

Dr. Richard Blackaby is president of Blackaby Ministries International as well as the Chancellor of the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary. He’s the author of Putting a Face on Grace and coauthor of numerous books with his father, Henry Blackaby, including Spiritual Leadership, Hearing God’s Voice and Experiencing God Day by Day. A former senior pastor, he served as president of the Canadian Southern Baptist Seminary from 1993 to 2006. He was also managing editor and contributing author for The Blackaby Study Bible. He and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of three children, and live in Cochrane, Alberta.

In his challenging new book, Unlimiting God, Richard Blackaby says, “Each of us must decide how closely we want to walk with God. We can choose mediocrity in our Christian life, or we can resolve to go deeper spiritually, growing in our love for God and increasing our capacity to hear from Him.”

According to Blackaby, as we mature in our Christian walk, we sometimes lose the excitement of our original encounter. We become less committed to Bible study and prayer, and if we allow it, distractions can creep in and crowd out our zeal for God and the work He wants to accomplish through us. Over time, we hear God’s voice less and less, and we wonder why He reveals himself to others and not to us.

Obviously, the problem isn’t God. As Blackaby says, “If we have a shallow walk with God, we cannot expect to receive deep revelations from Him.”

Blackaby points out that when we are unwilling to commit ourselves wholeheartedly to our relationship with the Lord, we limit God’s work in us, and we place restrictions on the amount of service we are able accomplish. God knows our potential, and He wants to use our circumstances to develop our faith and increase our capacity to serve Him, but we must surrender and do whatever it takes to draw closer to Him.

We also limit God when we limit what we believe God can or will do in our lives. When answers to our prayers don’t come in the time or way we think they should, we stop praying—and we stop believing—because we fail to realize that God allows troubles and difficulties so that we will become more mature, trusting believers. Instead of embracing the work God is doing through our troubles, we entertain doubt and place limitations on what God can do for and through us.

Blackaby came to realize in his own life, “The limit to my experience of God’s power rested not with God, but with me. His power is limitless; my faith is still growing.”

Unlimiting God examines the truths from scripture about how to remove the limits we place on God and ourselves. It discusses topics such as hearing God’s voice, allowing God to work through us, knowing God, experiencing God’s power in our lives, experiencing joy, and overcoming our own spiritual limits.

I recommend this book to all believers. It challenges us to consider our level of commitment, and it challenges the Church to embrace change in order to reach a lost and dying world for Christ. - Nancy Brown, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com

Publisher's Weekly

Christians, according to Blackaby, are “satisfied to plod along in dreary, unrewarding spirituality” and have “chosen to limit their experience of God.” If this former pastor and seminary president, well-known preacher and bestselling author has anything to say about it, Christians will soon “blow past every limitation” they’ve ever set for themselves in their Christian life. The issue isn’t God, he says, but us. Blackaby addresses some common limitations to a vital spiritual life, as well as how to overcome those limitations. The somewhat platitudinal list includes such statements as “God will not reveal more truth to you than you’re capable of receiving,” “God will match His assignments with your character and your walk with Him” and “We determine the amount of joy we experience from God.” Blackaby offers stories and liberal use of Scripture throughout, encouraging Christians to revitalize their relationship with God. Readers won’t find sparkling freshness here. They will, however, find help in rediscovering spiritual truths they’ve heard before, this time told against the backdrop of Blackaby’s heritage (his father is noted Christian leader Henry Blackaby) and experience. Blackaby’s book is a serviceable first step toward the radical commitment he claims God requires. (Jan.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Editorial Reviews

“Richard Blackaby brings this subject to the front burner to help us understand that it is an ordinary truth extraordinarily ignored! Dwelling on this message brings with it a special freedom!”
- J. Otis Ledbetter, Senior Pastor, Sonrise Church of Clovis, CA, author and conference speaker

“Richard Blackaby blends self-deprecating humor, flashes of introspection, and theological truth as he leads us to a fresh understanding of the power of God. The message is relevant, challenging, and inspirational.”
- Andrew Westmoreland, President, Samford University

Often we try to confine things in our lives to neat little boxes. When we do this, we limit the impact these things can have in our lives. Unfortunately, we often do the same thing with God. We put limits on what we think he can do and we limit our relationship with Him.

Rather than settling for mediocrity, the author suggests we pursue greater knowledge, intimacy and joy. When we do this we may find answers to questions common to Christians.

Richard Blackaby is the sole author of this book and he seems to want to show that he can stand outside the shadow of his famous father, Henry. While the writing is not quite to the level of his father, there is still much to be gleaned from this book.

This book was excellent. I was so excited by this book that I followed it up by leading a book study on it. More than 20 people participated and the Spirit touched everyone's heart. If you are looking to get in touch with the Holy Spirit and seriously look at how you are currently living then I can't recommend a better book.

Maybe it is just me, but I get very little out of anything the Blackaby's write. I am sure they are godly men, striving to help the body of Christ - I just don't find much help in their writing. This is no exception. There was very little practical application. I came away thinking, "Ok, I learn a little (very little) but Mr. Blackaby, what should I do with this insight?" The book gave me nothing.

Book worth reading. It has helped me to understand why believers (me) fail to reach their potential in many areas of their lives. God's love for us is so great that he will not allow our growth to surpass our character even when we have the skills to do so.
