In this powerful and inspirational true story, the 27-year-old widowed mother shares the little-known details of her traumatic ordeal, and expands on how her faith and the bestselling book, "The Purpose-Driven Life," helped her survive and bring the alleged killer's murderous rampage to a peaceful end.
Like her captor, Ashley Smith too, has faced darkness and despair. Yet even during the most desolate times of her life, she yearned for something better. Seeking a new life, she moved to Atlanta, got a job, enrolled in a medical assistant program, and was beginning to find her way to becoming the kind of mom she wanted her little six-year-old daughter to have. Then she was taken hostage.
Here is Ashley Smith's gripping account of how this nightmare scenario developed into a remarkable connection between a man wanted for multiple murders and a single mother struggling to make a fresh beginning from her checkered and tragic past.

By her own account, Ashley Smith is far from a hero. Yet today, her face is known around the world as the single mother who persuaded Brian Nichols, Atlantas courtroom killer, to surrender to police. Nichols called Ashley "an angel sent from God," but, ironically, it was Ashleys less-than-angelic past that allowed her to convince him to face justice. Today, Ashley lives in Atlanta with her daughter Paige and husband Daniel. She is actively involved with her church, Blackshear Place Baptist Church, and its Celebrate Recovery ministry, and continues to speak nationally and tell the story of Unlikely Angel, which debuted at #15 on the New York Times Bestseller List and is now a major motion picture. According to her wishes, some of the proceeds from the book will be donated to a memorial fund that will honor the victims of the courthouse tragedy.
Stacy Mattingly is an Atlanta-based writer.

bev p.5 Stars Out Of 5What a blessing this story is.December 18, 2011bev p.Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This is an incredible story that has many lessons we can all benefit from. Although a hostage, the young woman felt God's presence and guidance throughout the ordeal and as a result, she found true freedom. Some small parts were repetitive, but she can't stress enough the miraculous way the whole situation played out. If the story were being told in fiction, everyone would say it's just too unbelievable. Many thanks to Ashley Smith and everyone who prayed for her and helped make this book a reality.

She had a terrible experience and she knew the Lord was with her and He helped her through it. She was able to help someone else too. I followed up after reading the book and saw more of the case on-line and could see the man's sentencing online. Very interesting. I wonder how he is now.

But it is a wonderfully open and honest story about God using a regular person, plus the hurts from their past, to reach another hurting person. She readily admits her failures and mistakes, and yet God uses her anyway... the way God delights to use each one of us who will give ourselves to Him. Inspiring story!
