NANAPEORIA, ILAge: 55-65Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Above and beyond measureJanuary 29, 2014NANAPEORIA, ILAge: 55-65Gender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Love it! Love it! Love it! Lysa you are my new best friend. I saw the title for several months, and laughed because the woman had her head in a purse. I saw the title again and read some inserts_.wow! I thought, this woman is peaking in my window. I kept returning to this title and its inserts, then it hit me_this woman writes like I talk and feel. I bought the book and Lord behold, there I was on almost every single page. And the pages I was not on, well all I can say to those are "been there and done that". At the tender age of 61 I too am STILL working on all these issues, especially the stuffing and the "rock" throwing part. You have put your pen to paper just for me. I also have the audio book which I have now listened to 3 times (it's a 45min drive to work/45min drive home), so you really are my new best friend. Unglued, what a title! To the young ladies, to the mature ladies, to moms, to grand moms if you genuinely want to understand who you really are this is a requirement read book. Just so you know, me and some of my stuffer, over reacting, bump into my happy, emotional, unglued girl friends are going to study this book. Thanks for talking out loud about my (our) Ungluedness.

I keep reading sections of it over for reminders to myself. I'm not sure I realized someone else could have some of the same problems I have, or that anyone else understood.
nomer15Gender: female5 Stars Out Of 5Excellent and Wise WordsJanuary 11, 2014nomer15Gender: female"Unglued" by Lysa TerKeurst is a phenomenal book that helps women learn to make wise choices when confronted with their own raw emotions. Drawing on her own personal experience and biblical teaching, she shares what she has learned (and is learning) about submitting her emotions to the power of Jesus.
She addresses the fact that our emotions are God-given; our emotions help us to feel, connect, and experience life. But so often, women in particular are vulnerable to allow our emotions to run our lives. One truth that TerKeurst draws out in this book is that "God gave [us] emotions so [we] could experience life, not destroy it" (p. 16). This book is a fantastic manual to help women of all ages and stages experience "imperfect progress", which she defines as "slow steps of progress wrapped in grace" (p. 14).
Of especial importance are the chapters that help the reader define what kind of unglued you are. She explores four different types, two that stuff their emotions and two that explode with emotions, and offers sound biblical truth to help you on your journey of imperfect progress. One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from the chapter entitled "I Need a Procedure Manual": "The human soul is designed to recognize and respond to the calm assurance of Jesus. When I am in an unglued place, I can invite a power beyond my own into the situation by simply speaking His name. I don't have to know what to do. I don't have to have all the answers. I don't have to remember everything I learned in Bible study last week. I just have to remember one thing, one name--Jesus" (p.110-111).
This book was absolutely outstanding. TerKeurst has an easy writing style that makes the material easily accessible. The subject matter is a neglected one that desperately needs to be discussed in the church. She does a wonderful job with balancing her own experiences and stories with what the Bible says about handling emotions. While there are no study questions at the back of the book, there is a companion DVD study which would be helpful for small groups to go through the material. I highly recommend this book!

April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: female4 Stars Out Of 5Good book, would like to do the dvd studyDecember 5, 2013April EKSAge: 35-44Gender: femaleQuality: 4Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4Making wise choices in the midst of raw emotions - such an excellent subtitle - such a struggle for so many of us. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has struggled to make wise choices in the hectic moments of life, and not the only one who has come unglued at times, lashing out verbally at those around us. We can pull some major guilt trips on our families, putting on our martyr-hat and going on and on (loudly) about how we have to do all the work, no one appreciates us, and just what is everyone's problem anyway? Cupboard doors slam, feet stomp, husbands disappear to the garage, kids scatter and rush to finish their chores as fast as possible.
Lysa TerKeurst has opened up and revealed her own struggles with controlling her emotions - actually her reactions to raw emotions - in her book Unglued: Making Wise Choices in the Midst of Raw Emotions. She talks about the two wrong ways to handle those emotions - stuffing and exploding - and breaks it down into four different categories:
The Exploder Who Shames Herself
The Exploder Who Blames Others
The Stuffer Who Builds Barriers
The Stuffer Who Collects Retaliation Rocks
Lysa then tackles each category and shows us what each type of "unglued" looks like through examples from her own life. She shows how we can actually fall into different categories with different people, and most importantly, how we can overcome that tendency and handle conflicts in a godly way. My favorite chapters actually covered ways that we can equip ourselves to cope with the raw emotions by making sure we have room to breathe and our souls are filled with God's Word.
Lysa's book is very well-written and it was a very timely and helpful book for me. I haven't been giving myself room to breathe or spending enough time on my own spiritual growth, and it was showing. Hectic moments of life (which are frequent in a family our size) were just bringing out more and more unglued reactions from me. We all try to hide our tendency to come unglued from others, especially other Christians. I'm very thankful that Lysa tackled the subject so transparently, to help us overcome the tendency to stuff our frustrations down until we just can't hold any more and explode on our families and friends.
Lysa also has a DVD Bible study (also published by Zondervan) that accompanies this book, and the video portion of the study is filmed in Florence, Italy. I'd love to study this with the women in my church. Because while the book is very practical, it doesn't delve into Scripture as much as I'd like to, or as much as I need to overcome this battle. So while I recommend the book, I know from using some of Lysa's other DVD Bible studies, that I'll benefit even more from the study.
If you're struggling with your raw emotions, coming unglued with those you care about most ... please read Lysa's book, Unglued, or join a Bible study using her Unglued Study guide.
