Publisher's Description

What can God do with fifty days?

In only fifty days Peter was radically transformed. He went from being a man in the shadows denying even knowing Jesus, to a man boldly proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus in the middle of the temple courts. How did the change occur? And more importantly, can such a change occur within us—today, in the here and now?

For fifty days, I invite you to dwell in the first twelve chapters of Acts. Here we meet Peter face-to-face and encounter the source of his power. We become challenged to grab hold of that power ourselves, believing that God wants to do something in and through us that is unexplainable apart from Him. Let’s give God fifty days and see what He might do.

The purpose of this study isn’t simply to reiterate a message. (You can find many studies on Acts.) Our purpose is to reignite a movement of the power of the Holy Spirit in each of us individually and in our churches collectively. Are you ready?

— Erica Wiggenhorn

Participants will enjoy:

  • A verse-by-verse study spread over ten weeks (5 lessons/week)
  • Many biblical, theological, and historical insights
  • Text-based discussion questions that truly provoke thought

This is a 10 Week Bible Study of Acts 1-12 - noted on the cover: 'Recovering the wonder and devotion of the early church'. This is a larger than normal size paperback book at 7 inches by 9.5 inches. The cover has the feel of watercolor paper with a watercolor wash type design that resembles the sky and clouds. I really like it.

The introductory section is just a few pages long and it gets straight into Week One. Each week has a cover page and then following is divided into 'week one, day one' and so on. Each day (except day one which introduces) has a section of Acts to read aloud, then questions about it. Following that Erica leads the study through with thought provoking questions at the end relevant to the scriptures/topics being discussed. I can really see this working so well for a small group type setting.

I think in particular that this book is great to really get you

'chewing', dwelling, meditating on scripture. To really put yourself there and imagine how things were. For example - one of the studies talks about Barnabas when he brought in Paul. Erica discusses how Barnabas probably could have led the group himself and didn't really need Paul but he was humble and sharing the spotlight with someone else didn't phase him. A question following shortly after asks the reader: 'Have you ever experienced someone arriving to take over something you've started? If so, did you experience purity in your heart or resentment at feeling shoved aside?'

Also in certain parts she refers to her website for further background information on a section or topic also.

This is a really well thought out, well organized, study. I really enjoyed it. I felt like it led me through in a logical way and was very inspirational. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a great Bible Study on Acts!

Please note that I was sent a copy of this book for purposes of review, however the opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Several weeks ago, I happened upon a new Bible study, just released from Moody Publishers, that offered a 10 week study of Acts 1-12. An Unexplainable Life by author and Bible study teacher Erica Wiggenhorn intrigued me, so I asked to see it. I didn't want to just flip through it and write a review. I wanted to live in its pages, learn from it, and get a full opinion on this study.

I should confess that I'm kind of a stickler about Bible studies. If you know me, you know I do love a good Beth Moore study, complete with all the in-depth homework. I am not a fan of a fluffy Bible study. But I will say that a good Beth Moore study does demand a lot of time, if done properly {and if you're going to invest time in a Bible study, you should do it properly}.

    I was a combination of thrilled and relieved that Erica's study was nowhere near fluffy. She worked hard, did research, cross-referenced Scripture passages, and did a magnificent job of introducing important truths about the passion and persecution of the early church. {And I will add, for those of you who are not entirely thrilled about long hours of homework, that these daily study sessions are not so long that they're daunting. Manageable without being fluffy.}

Erica's study focuses on the unexplainable events of the early church: the change, courage, mission, vision, unity {and more} of that first group of Believers. She brought out points I'd never before considered and asked hard, convicting questions that sometimes I didn't have ready answers for.

I appreciated her theology, and I also appreciated the real-life stories she included, making it easy to relate to what she has to say.

I will also say that while this book is written as a women's study {and Erica's ministry is focused on women}, it is written in a broad enough sense that this easily fits men, too. When my husband and I started leading a Bible study this fall, I easily recommended this as the book we should study. For the past several weeks, a group of both men and women have gathered to study and discuss this book, and we're learning so much from our discussion together.

I am so glad I studied this book and have learned important truths to carry with me as I push forward in my own walk with the Lord. I appreciate Erica's hard work, her heart for ministry, and her insights into the early church. If you're looking for a study to do heading into the new year - whether on your own or in a group - I heartily recommend this one!

An Unexplainable Life: Recovering The Wonder And Devotion Of The Early Church by Erica Wiggenhorn is a 10-week Bible study of Acts 1-12, which breaks these twelve chapters down verse-by-verse and reflects upon them over the length of 50 days (5 days per week). In the introductory material, Erica states, "In only fifty days Peter went from a timid man, full of fear and hiding in the shadows, to a courageous follower of Jesus... What do you suppose God could do in and through each of us in fifty days if we spent time with Jesus in this study of His Word?" This is not just another basic study of the book of Acts. Instead, this is guidebook for understanding the level of devotion and wonder that Peter and other members of the early church had, and bringing that forward into your personal life with God so that you may reach your full potential in His eyes.

I love the formatting utilized by this book; the questions for you to focus on are separated and in blue print, and there are blue "picture frames" for you to draw or write your impressions of the personal truths being discovered. I do not love the fact that most of the Bible verses you are expected to read are not included in the print. One particularlesson covers Acts 1:9, Daniel 7:13-14, Acts, 1:10-11, John 16:7, and Acts 1:14 (in that order), which requires a lot of flipping around in your personal Bible. While I understand the issue of conserving space and wanting to encourage people to work in and with their own Bible, it would have been nice to have a few more of the one-verse quotes included in the text. Also, with various translations having differences in wording, it would have beenan aidin seeing the author's reference to each specificScripture passagea little more clearly.

While referring to the closing exercise of Week 1, Day 1, Erica states, "You may be a brand-new Christian, so this next exercise may be a little difficult for you to complete."Here's the thing: I would not recommend this to a new Christian. While it is very thorough and digs very VERY deep, this also makes it understandablycomplicated. I frequently found myself having to re-read the same Scripture passages two or three times in order to fully connect the passage with the study. This is also not something I would recommend for you to take on as a quick relaxing study in between dealing with the kids. It's made to take all of your focus and make you really think about what you've read and how you can integrate that into your life. It's not the light fluffy Bible study that so many companies seem to be mass-producing. Overall, I'm giving this 4/5 stars.

Honestly, it's a bit complicated for me right now. I read through it, but am not at the point in my life where I can sit and fully focus on every one of the exercises to gain the full benefit of this study's impact. That being said, I plan on putting it on a shelf and returning to it in a year or so when my life is more stable and I can truly appreciate the changes that this study dictates.

Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.. ~Luke 24:45

An Unexplainable Life, by Erica Wiggenhorn, is a verse-by-verse study of the first 12 chapters of the book of Acts. The workbook is divided into 10 weeks, and devotes approximately half a dozen pages of homework to each day.

Im excited to continue this 50-day study, and to see how much this book will impact my thinking and gain a fresh understanding of Acts.

I love the interactive design, the insightful questions presented, and the space to write in my responses.

Acts is the story of Christs mission becoming reality in the lives of his followers. To study it is an invitation for it to become your reality and mine. ~Erica Wiggenhorn

My impression of the study is that it is fairly in depth. It only covers the first 12 chapters of Acts, which is about 28 chapters long. Yet the study is 10 weeks long. There is quite a bit of author commentary in this bible study, including short stories from the author's life and background pieces relating to the reading. Each day's worth of the study is about 4 pages long.

I haven't had the chance to finish the entire study. I won't be done until about mid-October however I did want to comply with getting the review of the study done.

From what I have done, I believe this study has the ability to spark a move of the Holy Spirit. However I think that depends on the engagement of the person doing the study and prayer prior to sitting down with the study each week.

I personally notice that I feel that spark of the Holy Spirit when I spend time just praising Him for who He is and pray asking the Holy Spirit to show up in my study time. I also think that bible study is a necessary in life, it helps us to understand who God is and learn His character.

(FYI I did get this study from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.)
