Brianna4 Stars Out Of 5Grace for the Unexpected JourneyMay 7, 2018BriannaQuality: 5Value: 4Meets Expectations: 4I chose to read Grace for the Unexpected Journey, a devotional for Alzheimers and Dementia caregivers, written by Deborah Barr. Due to my career in long-term care, I was curious to explore Barrs encouragement for caregivers of persons with various forms of dementia.
Barr wrote short devotionals for 60 days; each devotional highlights an aspect of caregiving. Through stories from real caregivers, Barr captures and normalizes the varied emotions caregivers encounter in their role. She also includes Scripture and theology that forms a foundation to strengthen caregivers on difficult days.
The devotionals for days 35, 40, and 42 particularly stood out to me because Barr includes advice that I can attest to and affirm from my experience in healthcare. I recommend Grace for the Unexpected Journey to any reader who connects with a person with dementia whether through caregiving, friendship or acquaintance.

Maryann5 Stars Out Of 5A Recommended ReadMarch 6, 2018MaryannQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5Grace for the Unexpected Journey: A 60-Day Devotional for Alzheimer's and Other Dementia Caregivers byDeborah Barr would have been a saving mercy to my family 21 years ago.
Barr's book is a 60-day journey though the promises and truth of Scripture that are relevant to the care-giver of one who is suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's Disease. Each devotion holds a personal story of a care giver, short insights, and key Scripture verses to pray over and meditate upon.
Short and to the point, Barr's heart for people clearly shows in her devotional readings.
You can really see her insight and time that she took with such a sensitive subject. I highly recommend this book for caregivers, doctors and family of members who suffer through this particular mental illness.
I pray that you seek out this resource in your time of need or for others who may be longing for some faith-based encouragement.
