Publisher's Description
▼▲On Dee Branchs first date with Johnnie Oliver, a fourth-generation funeral director, she knew she was in for a unique relationship when he had to leave "for just a minute"and he came back to the car with a corpse.
Over twenty years later, Dee was still in love with her charming southern gentleman when he passed away suddenly in 2007. Determined to carry on Johnnies work, Dee earned her mortuary science degree, only to find herself no longer needed in the family business. So Dee crossed the racial divide in the most segregated industry in America and joined the staff of an African-American funeral home as a single white woman.
In The Undertakers Wife, Oliver draws from her wealth of experience to provide candid and often hysterically funny advice on dying well and surviving the loss of those who have gone before. Her insights on the common ground of grief, survival, and the ever-present faithfulness of God (to all of us, regardless of our race, religious upbringing, or socio-economic background) will help readers prepare for one of lifes only certaintiesand do it with wisdom, grace, and a healthy dose of joy.

tickmenotKansas CityGender: female5 Stars Out Of 5True Love....March 31, 2015tickmenotKansas CityGender: femaleQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5This review was written for The Undertaker's Wife: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Laughter in the Unlikeliest of Places.Dee Oliver shares her poignant love story of meeting and romancing her husband Johnnie, who also happened to be a fourth-generation director of a large influential funeral home in the south.
As with the course of all true love, there were hurdles to overcome. Less the reader think that included stopping on their first date at the home of a recently departed soul, or needing to escort a person to their burial place in the middle of an out-of-town shopping trip, it was something else entirely. But ultimately, the wedding bells do ring for them.
Life takes a left turn.
Suddenly, Dee finds herself a widow. And when she felt more alone than ever, God steps in and helps her. Often with a twinkle in her eye, the author tells what it is like raising three daughters by herself and re-entering the dating world. She includes the shock and disappointment she faces when her husband's family refuses to let her intern with them to fulfill Johnnie's wish that she get a mortuary science degree. We journey with her as she finds the doors closed to her at all the funeral homes in town except an African American business.
Give credit where credit is due.
Dee is a spunky take charge kind of lady who writes a great story about overcoming one of the hardest things in life, and doing it with style. She gives God the credit for getting her through every single day. This 5-star book will bring tears to your eyes, a smile to your face, and find a place in your heart. I recommend it.
