Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I hold a B.S. in Bible from Philadelphia Biblical University, a Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary, a D.Min. from Regent University, and studied for a year at Jerusalem University College in Jerusalem, Israel. I have been involved in ministry for over 35 years as a pastor, teacher, and church planter. My passion is to know the Savior more deeply and to teach others to know him. I live with my wife, Johnna, in Marion, Iowa where we home school our four children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  A passing remark on the way we ask questions challenged me to study the way Jesus asked questions. “Surely,” I thought, “how much better we could learn to ask questions of others, if we learned from the Master Teacher Himself.” Little did I know that my pursuit would led me on one of the most challenging journeys I had ever experienced.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  As you read The Questions of Jesus I hope you’ll discover as I did that Jesus never asked a question because He needed to know the answer.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  For over 20 years now I have been studying the questions that Jesus asks. Just the questions. When I started this project, I thought studying Jesus' questions would make me a better Questioner. But I soon discovered His questions can only be mimicked in a crude fashion. His skill in crafting a question to pierce the heart, to quicken the thoughts, to convict the conscience, to elicit faith – those are abilities that are only occasionally, if ever, stumbled upon in the discourse between men. I finally had to conclude that His ability to ask the right question at the right moment for the right need will be unmatched by anyone. His questions were truly unique because Jesus was unique. They are uncommon questions from an extraordinary Savior.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  My favorite authors include: Leon Wood, Leonard Sweet, Lewis Sperry Chafer, and Henri Nouwen.

Anything else you'd like readers / listeners to know:  Both my wife and I have walked with the Lord for more than three decades and have a solid, biblical education. We talk and pray together and have a strong, dynamic marriage. We love take-out Chinese and Sci-Fi movies, and go on a date at least once a week. All of our children came to Christ at a young age and ministry is a very real part of their life. As a family we love to spend time together – whether it is playing a game of Monopoly or watching a Lord of the Rings movie. Each week we block out at least a half day for family time. I enjoy playing the piano, reading, writing, fencing, skiing, bowling, and collecting banana stickers.
