Uncommon is one of those books that once you pick up, you can't let go. It's one of those books that will stay with you for a long time, if not your whole life. It's one of those books you want to shout at the top of your lungs for your friends to consider reading. It's also one that would be a great small group discussion book or a book club.  Either way, Uncommon is aptly named, even if it's not talking about the book itself but what God called us to be.

". . . you cannot live extraordinary when you live in the bondage of ordinary. You weren't created to survive. You were created to thrive." (20)

What does it mean to be uncommon or "pursue a life of passion and purpose"? Carey Scott shared exactly what it means in Uncommon, and what a powerful call-to-action and self-reflection this book is. Insightful in purposeful living in what we're called to do in faith and as Christians, the author touched on topics of courage, obedience, forgiveness, grace, prayer and what it means to be uncommon and extraordinary.

"When we invite Him into our broken places, we experience freedom. The chains that have held us hostage fall away. . . when we choose to walk away from them in our God-given freedom - freedom to believe we're good, lovable, and worthy, freedom from worrying if we have what it takes to be the woman God created us to be, freedom from being consumed by what others think of us, freedom from trying to fit into the world's ways - we can live uncommon. God is the key."(19)

I find the author's writing style friendly and not at all preachy. Refreshing and down-to-earth, Uncommon talks to each of us sisters-in-Christ with genuine love. I enjoyed every word in this book, and in honesty, it took some time to finish it. Not because it was dry or even boring. It took time because it was filled with such insight, wisdom and common sense, that it required a lot of thought. Self-reflecting about my choices and how I live my life as God had called me to.

"Uncommon living doesn't mean we won't struggle. It doesn't mean we'll never be tempted. . . (or) royally mess up . . . nor does it mean we will always make the best choices or that our lives will always point others to God. Remember, living uncommon isn't about perfect living. It's about purposeful living."(240)

"He exchanges our ordinary for extraordinary. . . That's what happens when we give God permission to use our story. . . But it's a choice - every day and in every situation. Being uncommon takes guts and grit and a willingness to surrender." (15)

So what is your choice? Are you willing to choose to surrender?

this was a good easy read while sitting on the beach. Do not know how much I took away from this. Light in Biblical doctrine..more of a "feel good" book. Did not care for the bible translations of scripture used..they were loosely worded in comparison to other translations like NIV.

Uncommon, Pursuing a Life of Passion and Purpose by Carey Scott has been described as a battle cry for women to step out of the ordinary and live life differently. The book provides readers with new ways to find purpose in their lives. In her dedication Scott recognizes women who believe that being different isnt a bad thing. Clearly the author finds herself in that category.

As the book begins, the author is dealing with a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. Her first response is typicalcrying, screaming at and pleading with God. After all she has already experienced sexual abuse as a child and a painful and embarrassing divorce. In addition shes needed by her family more than ever. Her son is being bullied at school, and her daughter exhibits frequent anxiety. With these troubles, Scott says that she was already at the crossroads of questioning God and trusting God.

When she finally surrenders to God, she feels a sense of peace and is filled with the knowledge that God has a plan for her life. She believes that part of that plan is going from a common to an uncommon life. By her definition uncommon women are those that rise above gender stereotypes, dysfunctional families and fear in order to grasp the uncommon way of looking and acting.

Early in the book, Scott outlines ten traits of the uncommon woman. They include relying on God more than yourself, standing up for whats right, living in the present instead of the past and finding hope where you would normally (commonly!) be in short supply. To do that the author tells us that the author uses women of both the Old and New Testaments to illustrate her point. At the conclusion of each chapter the reader will find a short list of scriptures that will help her lean into God and allow Him to use her capabilities. These verses are followed by an appropriate prayer.

Scotts book is appropriate for both personal study and faith-based book clubs. The writing is crisp and the research is obvious.

I really enjoyed this book...Carey made me feel very special! When I finished reading this book...it made me realize that every person is put here for a purpose...we are all different...but the same...and you should never hide that special part of you...just so you can fit in somewhere...in a group!!! Stand up for your differences...they actually might help someone else...in the same situation...who has not read this book...and needs a helping hand in their life! It could make a big difference! Carey is a great writer...who really made me feel good...I felt special again...for the first time in a long time...it ignited a spark in me...that had been missing...and i thank her very much for doing that for me! And she used Bible Scripture and passages...in such a way that didn't seem overly religious either! If you can understand that! I am a person...that doesnt enjoy religion being forced on me...and so that made me really happy...it made it that more enjoyable to read! I believe in God...etc...but i just don't like it thrown at me all the time! God created us all...unique in our own ways...to come together...and make one world! One united world! Her stories seemed to come straight from her heart...like she, herself, had lived many of the situations...that she talked about! And she also added a bit of humor to it...which I haven't seen a writer do...with this kind of thing...and it made it feel lighter...like it was definitely not wrong to be the red peg...in a lot of blue ones...the one thing that stood out the most in this book is that...never be afraid to be different!!! Don't be afraid to be different...act different...do things in a different way...think different...talk different...walk different...just don't be afraid to be different...in absolutely any way!!! Not everyone will always accept you...but you need to always accept yourself...above all things!!! I can't wait to read something else by Ms. Scott...I am sure it will be a pleasure as well!!!
