Each full-color lesson includes a short chapter to read that explains the topic to the student; chapters feature both modern and historical photographs and illustrations. Lessons conclude with a variety of subject-based activity ideas that relate to Biblical studies, literature, creative writing, art, vocabulary, reading assignments, and notes for the sold-separately (and optional) student workbook/lesson review. A weekly family activity that involves crafts, meals, and other multi-age activities is also provided.
Fifteen units are included each text, with four lessons in each unit. Depending on how many activities are assigned, students will need 45-90 minutes per lesson. However, the back of each book includes fifteen optional lessons on America's patriotic holidays. If five lessons per week are desired, the holiday lessons can be used as a fifth lesson or for other occasions. A total of 150 lessons/30 weeks of lessons are provided.
The included answer key provides answers for the end-of-lesson assignments, student workbook, and lesson review.
The Citizen's Handbook is a collection of primary sources related to American government, politics, and civics, such as letters, memoirs, speeches, articles, songs, and poems; it is often referenced in the lesson activities. The book also includes Virtue Stories about how Americans have served and sacrificed for the benefit of others.

S.B,5 Stars Out Of 5Absolutley Wonderful!April 4, 2016S.B,Quality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5I have been homeschooling for 15+ years and our oldest is now in college. I have tons of curriculum at this point. I reluctantly thought, "Well, I guess I will try something new this year." I purchased this curriculum for our 6th and 8th grader and they loved it. I am so happy with this set. They were able to work mostly independently and retained what they learned. We had great discussions throughout the course. I added some extra reading and assignments to challenge them (not that this set was below their level). The material is presented in a friendly way, easy to understand. It can be used with younger learners as a read aloud and discuss, or you can do as we did with our older students and monitor their work, but let them have the responsibility and work independently. I chose to have them write in a notebook as opposed to writing directly in the work books to make this a non-consumable product. This was it can be reused with younger siblings.
The best yet: We had the opportunity to visit our state house and watch our state congress in action. Both my students had a thorough understanding of what was presented by the speakers, the vocabulary and the processes. It doesn't get any better than that. I am very pleased. Thank you Notgrass Company.
TFHomeschool5 Stars Out Of 5Thorough and fun coverage of civics and governmentAugust 3, 2015TFHomeschoolQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5My middle schooler loved this course. The textbook readings were just the right length and very informative. The recommended literature and primary sources in the Citizen's Handbook rounded out the study nicely. We also used the lesson review and found it to be a good check of comprehension.

nancyt5 Stars Out Of 5Uncle Sam and You SetJuly 28, 2015nancytQuality: 5Value: 5Meets Expectations: 5We used Uncle Sam and You and enjoyed it greatly. It gives God the glory for all. There is no Twaddle. It is great not just facts but is written in a conversational tone. All the literature books that accompany the set are fun and enjoyable to read. I would recommend this set to anyone. Notgrass writes the best history we have ever used. We have tried many and were totally bored. Notgrass is never boring, always informational, challenging, but always fun. Sometimes we wanted to do history and nothing else. That is why it is so great. We never wanted to put it down. It also has God as most important.
